Panasonic Leica 50-200mm v 100-400mm prices

The pricing of these seems strange.  Yes, the 50-200 has slightly more elements than the 100-400, but it's also considerably smaller and lighter.  Maybe the two lenses could reasonably be priced around the same.  But I can get the 100-400 for £840, while the cheapest I can find the 50-200 is £1190.
Perhaps the 50-200 is priced like that because there's no competition in same range/speed area, but arguably that's true of the 100-400 too.  But maybe I just have to wait a couple of years.

Quoting relative 'cheapest' prices is not really a good measure as that can be tainted by special offers, loss leaders, grey imports etc etc, it would be better to quote prices from the same supplier - that said it doesn't make a great deal of difference - WEX have the 50-200 @ 1500 and the 100-400@ 1269. The cheapest I could find on a quick search for a 50-200 is £1139 from E-Finity who have the 1---400 @ £869 - so I guess there's an average differential of around £250.

You have cameras, lenses and a desire to take pictures. A pro shoots with his kit and worries about clients, prosumers worry about their lenses - everyone else worries about everything.

My prices were actually from the same supplier, eglobalcentraluk.com.  I'll look at e-finity, thanks for the pointer.

Panny 100-400mm is older, lots of complaints

The 100-400 is older, and there have been a lot of complaints about it (including on this website)

I'm not aware of complaints regarding the 50-200 ( but I'm not following that lens closely).
