200/2.8 mkII... I guess we are gonna like each other
1

a month ago I jumped the gun on this lens, as I wanted a long telephoto for isolating subjects and playing with OOF for nature shots. with Dutch winter being particularily unsuitable (and pretty uncooperative this year as well) it took me a while to get to properly try it out. but, yep, first real try is there and I'm loving it...

f/3.2

Nice picture.........love the colors. This is the type of images I like to take. I use the 100 mm (non-L) macro for mine. I get some pretty good isolation, but the 200 is definitely better. Keep posting pics !!!

I'm in a similar boat with my 135 f/2 on crop.  It also comes in handy for indoor sports.

135/2 is my long time dream, but being hobby landscape/travel/nature photograper I can't really justify spending 600 EUR on a lens that I'd be using only occasionally. even this 200/2.8 is a little overkill, but I found it for mere 325 EUR (for a 2 year old lens in great condition) and decided to give it a go. they are not as easy to sell as 135/2 but I figured even if it doesn't work I can hang on it for a couple of months and sell it for same price

I've got a Mk 1 version that I've had for some years - it's optically identical, but has a built-in hood (that won't stay in place very well - I see why they changed it!).
It's a very good lens indeed that I use mostly when trying to keep DSLR weight down. Most successful lens I've used with my Mk I 2x extender, too.

...Canon never updated it with IS requiring anyone that wanted 200mm f/2.8 and IS to use a much larger, heavier, more expensive, and slower focusing 70-200 / 2.8 IS zoom. I certainly don't expect Canon to make an RF version of the 200 / 2.8L, with or without IS, anytime soon, or ever, even.

In any case, many of my favorite photos were taken with this lens.

Re: 200/2.8 mkII... I guess we are gonna like each other

After getting 24-105L I included 200/2,8L to my gear. Using telezoom before I acknowledged that many shots has been done at the long end. And a black color was my preference. I Like the quality of photos.

Just a question regarding to the use of TC. Some time ago I used Kenko 1,4 TC and didn't find it useful. What's your experience using Canon 2x TC?

Thank you.

It's the only lens I'm prepared to use my Mk I Canon 2x on; results aren't bad, especially stopped down 2 stops, and you have an amazingly compact 400mm lens.

Better with the Mk II and III TCs, or is the lens too old to benefit from their improvements?

They're optically better, so will be better. I do have the 1.4x Mk II, and there's hardly  any loss of quality with it, but I've used the 2x more with this lens because it's by far the most compact route I have to 400mm.
