Viewer for this type of 3D?

I've come across 3D photos on the internet with a top bhoto above a bottom photo and was wondering what type of viewer is needed to view this type of 3D

This format

It is possible that these images were intended for an under/over viewer like this one:

https://www.berezin.com/3d/ViewMagic.htm

The advantage of this kind of viewer is primary for 3D panoramic images where the long narrow images are not easily viewed in a side-by-side format.  On the other hand this is also the native format for 3D Blu-ray called  "frame packing ".  Can you provide a link to where you found these under/over 3D images?

I haven't tried it but I'm pretty sure StereoPhoto Maker can change these top/bottom images into side by side or reversed side by side images for stereoscope or cross eyed viewing.

I can confirm that SPM (StereoPhoto Maker ) can indeed do such a conversion.  I haven't come across a digital s3D format yet that SPM cannot recognize.  Once an s3D image is loaded into SPM, you can save it in any other supported s3D format.

Thanks for the link Bill.

Will this program work with Windows 8.1 (has anyone tried it with this operating system)?

Thinks for the link I was wondering what type of view was used to view this type of 3D image.

I believe that SPM will work on Windows XP and up.

It's an easy install, just a EXE.

I'm able to  use it on a Mac using WINE.

Top bottom is commonly used for VR

Top bottom format is typically used for 3D 360, and sometimes for 3D 180, for viewing with Google Cardboard or other VR headset.  Did the images appear warped toward their top edges and bottom edges?  If so then yes those are top-bottom stereoscopic equirectangular 3D 360 format.

Where can you buy the cardboard VR viewers from?

Re: Top bottom is commonly used for VR

Hi Brian!  You can buy a Google Cardboard headset at almost any electronics store or department store.  I've also seen them occasionally at a dollar store (for around $6).  you can also buy one from Amazon.
If you happen to have a Samsung S6 or above, I would highly highly highly recommend getting a samsung gear VR instead.  Huuuuge difference from cheap google cardboard vr because of much better head tracking.
And sorry if I'm jumping the gun here, but i'm anticipating that you might also be interested in how to capture photos and videos in VR.  A very good camera for doing that is called Insta360 EVO.  Here is my review:

The review is in 2D so if you want to see an actual sample, here is a sample video in VR180 format (to view it in 3D, you must use the YouTube app, then click on the google cardboard icon which looks like a pair of goggles on the bottom right corner):

Best regards,

Mic

Re: Top bottom is commonly used for VR

Thanks creaDvty for the info and videos.

The problem I have is that I'd need to my Samsung phone out of it's cover, which involves pulling it out of some tight corners before I could put it into a VR device.

I was thinking that with the cardboard VR then I could hope my phone in place and not have to take it out of it's cover each time I want to view VR.

Samsung need to create a way of either keeping the phone in it's cover while using on a VR headset or have a quicker easier way of unclipping the phone from it's cover.

samsung cover

I know what you mean!  The cover I use for my Samsung is the otterbox commuter.  You can peel it off and snap it back easily.  And while it's not as protective as the defender, it is also very sturdy and has protected my s8 from several falls with no damage to the phone.

All that is needed is a VR viewer that holds the phone against the front of the viewer and allows the flap of the case to hung down or rest on top of the viewer.

Remember the 3D viewers of the past where you use to place a cardboard photo that had two photos side by side in it then held the device to your eyes. I can't see why you can't do that with a Smartphone which would replace the cardboard photo.
Getting the correct lens could be a problem unless I use some magnifying glasses.

Do a Google image search on Holmes Stereoscope for lots of examples of the device you're thinking of.

I can't see why ou can't do that with a Smartphone which would replace the cardboard photo.

You certainly can. There are lots of modern versions of the Holmes Stereoscope. Here's just one example being used with smart phone:

BTW ... if you are interested in 3D photography, and a fan of the rock group Queen, then you probably would find this book very interesting...

I was able to borrow a copy using interlibrary loan from my local library.

Thanks Bill for the links.

What type of 3D do they use for the book, I'm thinking that laser 3D was used but they mainly use that on just the covers of books.

I must get my local library to see if it's available.

side-by-side photographs, like a stereo card printed on the page.  There is a plastic viewer in the back cover to help you view the images.  The author also explains how you can train your eyes to view the images in 3D without any optical device.  This is called free viewing.  If you learn how to do that, you can do the same thing with side-by-side images on a phone -- may 3D nuts do this as well.  It doesn't take the place of a really nice viewer with good optics, but it is a handy skill to be able to see the 3D in a side-by-side image.  I've never been able to master it myself.

Hi Bill.

I often do that cross eyed method when viewing two photos side by side.

To be successful you need to be relaxed and pick some object in the photo that will move to the middle as the two photos merge as one. It's something that you can't force but it can happen if you stare at the photos for a while.

You can also try looking at a distance object then back to the photos as your eyes should be in the right position.
Try doing it late at night when your feeling tried, you should be more relaxed.

As I got older I found it easier to do.

Yup, that I can do.  But it doesn't help with the odd stereo card you might come across, unless you're willing to cut it in half and re-arrange it!  ;^J

But after 30 years of trying, I still can't free view.

Freeviewing

I love freeviewing but viewing 3d360 or 3d180 on a "real" Vr headset (gear vr, oculus go, daydream, or desktop vr) is a whole other level of immersion. If you have the chance, i highly recommend checking it out at your local best buy or electronics store.

Having a wider view helps also as some only offer a narrow view so it's like looking down a tunnel to view the photo.

The problem is that 3D and VR seemed to take a dip in he market so most places in my country (New Zealand) don't offer demos of VR glasses.
