Nikon Z7 with Atomos Ninja 5: lowest ISO allowed is 800?

I'm finding that when my Z7 is looked up to my Ninja V, it won't let me use lower than 800 ISO (can't get to 400/200/etc).  I can't think of why this limitation would exist...  Any thoughts?

When N-Log is enabled, the minimum ISO is 800 (Page 346 of the Z7 manual). A higher base ISO is nearly-universal when using log profiles on digital cameras.

Correct, this is in the camera manual, and I get the same results with my PixE and N Log. That said, you can turn N Log off, and shoot in video Rec 709 to get ready to use ProRes files on both the Ninja V and Pix E, then you can select down to ISO 100, but 200 will give a little more dynamic range in Video mode. In N Log, ISO 800 is the sweet spot, from tests I have seen.  You can add ND filters to help control the exposure and use the f/stop yiu need for the shot.
Cheers

"Sweet spot" implies that above or below has disadvantages.  If lower than ISO was an option, what would the downside be?  Sorry, I'm just having trouble accepting that the lowest ISO for video on a $3k new camera is 800, that's awfully noisy.  What part of capturing data in a different LUT requires capturing at a higher sensor sensitivity?

I have nothing to contribute to this thread, but it is an interesting topic. I just want to follow along as people post.

Do you know why this is the case?

Nikon Z7: $3400

Atomos Ninja 5: $700

Not reading the manual, and shooting in Log without understanding it: Priceless

It depends on the camera. Nikon hasn't given us enough information about their log to know what's going on, but if it's like Sony's implementation, the ISO setting doesn't affect the sensor when recording in log. The sensor is recording at its base ISO and the ISO setting is chosen by Sony to make sure the exposure meter gives the user the right readings to expose log correctly.

No need for this mate. We all had to start videoing in log for the first time sometime didn't we? The cost is irrelevant.. the camera is a very good stills camera and video (non-log) camera...   I guess he could've read the manual but there'd still be questions...

So he wants to learn about this log stuff.. good on him.

My 2 bits worth to the OP - my GH5 has a similar constraint.. i think its ISO400 but not sure.. same with my DJI Phantom Pro 4 drone.. something to do with sweet spot for DR etc i think... as you do shoot log for maximum DR and just maximising post processing in general.. almost like a native ISO or something..

Yes, it's ISO 800 on the Z6 when using N-log.

The Z series cameras are iso-less https://improvephotography.com/34818/iso-invariance/

ISO in modern digital camera does not behave as it did in film cameras. Also the Z6 and Z7 have dual Gains. The Z6 has one Gain circuitry up to ISO 640 and another from ISO 800.
