Lens hood falling off — any tips?

I bought a recommended Canon lens hood to replace the infamous Olympus 40-150 Pro lens hood that has fallen tompieces and it is a pretty good fit but it tends to come off.

Do you have any suggestions on how to secure it better to the lens?

I don't have the lens but would some electrical (insulating) tape take care of it?

*That is if you don't need to remove it all the time to reverse it etc...

Thanks for the suggestion. I did think  of that, but I would need to remove it to reverse the hood every time I put the camera back in my bag.

Mine, a JJC hood, doesn’t fall off if secured properly. It does wobble around a bit but does the job. I think their miht be two different versions of this hood, one is petal shaped and one is not (the one I have), but I am not sure.

JJC LH-78ii generic hood

Thanks for the suggestion but that would mean taking the duct tape off and on several time per outing. Don’t really want to do that. And for travelling, I would have to carry duct tape with me.

Just out of curiosity how does it attach?  Is I a bayonet or something else?

Totally different lens, but I have a 12-35 hood with a bayonet that does not stay oriented vertically

i suppose something has worn a little. I was thinking of using something to increase the friction a little such as a small piece of tape on the lens barrel

The original hood falls apart due to a plastic retaining collar, about 1cm deep, becoming detached from the rest of the hood, releasing all of the springs and ball bearings etc.

This has happened twice to me, my dealer replacing it twice with no issues.

A good solution would simply to add some tidy black duct tape to make the small collar immovable. Especially when taking it out of the bag where it’s most vulnerable.

Thanks Keith but I am not  trying to fix the original Oly lens hood, but trying to secure better the Canin hood I bought as a replacement.

yes it is a bayonet mount but it is not made for that lens. It’s a generic hood suggested to replace the Oly hood that is expensive and keeps breaking.

what I bought is this hood: Fotodiox Lens Hood for Canon EOS EF 135mm f/2.0L, 180mm f/3.5L Lens, (replaces Canon ET-78II, ET-78 II)

I just want to find a way to secure it better.

Scotch tape then; it's lighter. Or, more to the point, a dab of tape or contact cement on one of the surfaces BEFORE you screw the hood back on, just to give the whole thing a bit more friction.

Seriously, sometimes the simplest solutions are the best...

I have the Fotodiox versions of the Canon lens hoods (deep and tulip).  They are tricky to get on right, but once on they do not fall off or wiggle around.  If you use them a lot, they might lose their grip.

I suggest buying another; they're cheap.  I would get the tulip one; less obtrusive.

I, too, am in that category of Oly lens hood  for the 40-150 mm f/ 2.8 crumbling in my hands with springs and bearings falling out everywhere...rendering it useless. Not once, but twice! Likewise, I am now using the Fotodiox lens hood for Canon 135mm f/2  ET-78II. Here's my tip for those also using the Fotodiox lens hood. When slowing turning the hood onto the lens end, you will feel a point when it couples to the lens end. Mark that point with a pencil dot. Then rotate hood to the locking point, and mark that spot as well. Then, using fingernail polish, I put a good-sized red glob on the beginning point of connection, and then a green glob of nail polish on the "locked" spot. This tells me visually when the hood is connecting and when "locked". Because  we are using a lens shade designed for another manufacturer's lens, it's not a really tight fit, but it does the job. I reverse the hood when putting away the 40-150mm away in my camera bag. I think I am approaching two years with this arrangement, and lens hood is still working. The alignment points really help with knowing where to start and finish attachment and de-attachment.

Great idea with the nail polish. I’ll give it a try.
