I'm buying an m43 despite m43 death rumors!

Re: Better move quick!

Good advice, I'm sure this isn't the last necessary or Gas attack purchase I will make.

I hold on to my old cameras because I enjoy using them and also because they have no monetary value. The Dimage 7 is a frustrating camera to use with it's EVF and Battery life but the results are enjoyable and good IRs.

I got the same kit. The kit lenses are surprisingly good. Dual IS works well and I don't need a tripod unless the light is really limited.

I strongly recommend a second battery. The camera has a lot of settings, take time to learn it and program the Fn buttons.

I hope so, I'm a Nikon user, D800 and D7000.

Though I also collect old film cameras (mostly soviet kiev/fed/zorki at mo) and do try and shoot at least a roll through those cameras over the years.

Past two or so years though I've done very little photography.

I had both: good choice to switch!

Terrific choices.

I had a 70d with a 10-18, 18-135 and 55-250 (and other EOS lenses). I now have a GX85 with the 12-32 and 45-150 (and other micro 4/3 lenses).

The Panasonic is far superior for video, which is why I made the switch. There really is no comparison for video. I think both camera take great photos. The 70d has better autofocus for sports. In a narrow depth of field shot with a stationary subject, the Panasonic not going to miss focus, the Canon might. Both are fun to use in different ways: EVF vs OVF. I find the GX85 and all Panasonic cameras to be very logical and well laid out with buttons and menus, similar to Canon. You can customize the Panasonic more than the 70d.

The 12-32 is amazing. Simply amazing. It is razor sharp and is so tiny and light. It really is a phenomenal lens for the size. I’ve never had anything like it. I’m sure the 18-55 is a nice lens, as is the 18-135. But both are gigantic compared to the 12-32.

The 45-150 is also very sharp, comparable to the 55-250 but with less reach. It is a shame it has less reach, but other than that these lenses are very comparable. Of course the 45-150 is quite a bit smaller and lighter.

You’ll have to decide how much you’ll miss having an ultra wide, and you can always use the panorama mode which Panasonic has but Canon doesn’t. I haven’t used that mode, so I guess I haven’t missed having a wide angle, but I also haven’t travelled anywhere with wide vistas since making the switch.

Enjoy!!

If some of you use the GX85 and either of the lenses I mentioned, any comments will be appreciated.

Used all 3. The 12-32mm is wonderful, don't hesitate. The tele zoom didn't impress me, I much preferred the 12-32's big sister the 35-100mm. Although it is obviously very limited in range. The camera was horrible, especially as the EVF just didn't work because I wear glasses and perhaps it is worse due to astigmatism. If you have that try before you buy. Lots of people seem OK with the EVF.

Personally I would recommend you also hold the G85 (510g), which is far more comfortable, if out of budget the G7 (410g) is a bit less sharp than GX85 (426g) but a joy to hold and use. With the 12-32mm (70g) it is extremely lightweight and there is no need for a camera bag, just a small pouch for the tele zoom. I think even centurions would have no issue carrying around the G7 and 12-32mm hanging off a couple of fingers for hours, with a wrist strap. That's impossible with the GX cameras, they need a neck strap.

Re: I'm buying an m43 despite m43 death rumors!

I really like this Rumor about the death of the m4/3 system.  I'm a bit greedy, thinking that prices would drop and I can take advantage of cheaper gear(not that I need anything).  But, I do have the gx80(85) and love it, and the lenses that come with the camera are perfect for travel.

I am however curious to know where you are travelling.  I mean, city, countryside, cruise...I enjoy travel and if I can't go myself, at the moment, I have to do it vicariously. In any case, the gx80/85 is a good travel companion, small, stelth but with enough bells and whistles to impress.

Yeah, I was also in the market for a travel camera and couldn't care less about rumors of systems.... I even bought a G80/85 last week despite a replacement being rumored.

The camera and lens (12-60) works like a dream and is small and lightweight.

... now just drooling about adding a 14-140mm for when I need the reach.

Interesting observation, I've already ordered it so I'll have to see if this will apply to me.

I know what you mean by not needing anything. In 2019 I will be going to SE Asia, Thailand and Singapore, I would like to see India also but I think that will require a separate trip with more time to see such a diverse country.

Re: I'm buying an m43 despite m43 death rumors!

Hope you get your 14-140. I should mention that I have three 4/3 digital lenses ( 14-45/3.5, 40-150/3.5 and 70-300/4) and a Fotodiox AF adapter but I won't be travelling with those.

I glad to hear about the performance of those lenses. The GX85 isn't going to replace my 70D, it's just an addition.

I'm drooling, not only because of the photographic opportunities, but thinking about the food;-)

I'm officially jealous.  I look forward to your photographic memoir.  I've never been to Asia, or Africa yet.  So, I'd better get a move on.  I'm sure you'll enjoy your trip.

Yes, not allowing yourself to buy a new toy is difficult.  One day at a time;-))

I've been there before and the photo ops of Landscapes, Temples and people are endless. The food is good though I'm selective with Asian cuisine.

Even better.

I wanted a single camera to shoot both photos and video, and wanted a GH5 for 4k 60p, and couldn't justify getting two complete kits of lenses. So I sold my Canon gear and switched entirely to micro 4/3. Panasonic isn't perfect, neither is Canon, but overall I'm pleased with making a switch.
