Re: A new owner

while a nice prime, it is a bit short though--you might stick a canon 1.4x III or 2.0x III on it all the time, however, it is very handhold-able congrats on your new expensive toy, happy zooming.

That must be the shortest review ever - but I 100% agree

Short only to those coming from 300mm or 400mm?

Not really, it's just about what you need. As a general rule I use mine with the 1.4x on the 5D4, but the bare 500 is a nice length on the 7D2, and practical for hand-holding. I came from the 300+2x to get better AF.

when you come from 300mm/400mm lenses (i have all 3, 300 f2.8 II, 100-400 II, 400 f5.6), you have high expectation when you hold the 500mm prime and you soon realize it is not near enough for small birds shoot! so you stick a 1.4x TC to it and you still find it is short and so on i do the same with my 600mm prime, it just isn't enough when i use it bare, so i attach a 1.4x III TC and it seems decent enough but soon there are situations i wish to have more reach--it just doesn't end! but unfortunately with 600mm + 1.4x III, the lens get quite heavy and can be handheld for just a few min. and the easiest thing is to put the lens/camera on a tripod, which makes the whole setup too cumbersome to shoot little birds with   of course, i use the setup with my 1D type cameras (1Dx-1dmk4) that weigh quite a bit themselves then say, 5Dx type cameras!

I find the 500 the perfect length for birding. Sure the 600 is nice and a little longer, but its a pain to travel with. Not to mention... you'll inevitably want even more lens at some point. The best fix to that problem, once you find an adequate focal length, is better fieldcraft. Figuring out how to get closer is an art and can be incredibly frustrating... but it can also be equally rewarding when it all comes together.
