What to do? What to do?

I'm considering the 2 following options:

1) Replacing my Olympus 40-150 f/2.8 Pro with the Panasonic 35-100 f/2.8 mk2 mostly because of size and weight (for travel).
2) Replacing my Olympus 40-150 f/2.8 Pro + my Olympus 12-40 Pro with the Olympus 12-100 f4 for similar reasons i.e. total weight and size. What are your thoughts and suggestions?
I should mention that I have the PL 100-400 for telephoto purposes.

1st thing .. how did the safari go.? (ok pm me on that

I've got the 35-100mm and the 40-150 (with TC 1.4). I love both of them for different reasons. The former goes in my 'go to' bag along with the 12-35 for family /weekend time, its a wonderful lightweight lens with cracking IQ. The 40-150....yep it's relatively heavy but Wow Wow Wow I love the bloody thing

So, I'm not sure I've helped! x

I picked up the 12-100 before a trip to Italy last September and was very happy with it.  I still carried my 7-14 for added width indoors but the 12-100 served well outdoors even for night shots as the Sync-IS more than compensated for the extra stop.

I still have my 12-40 as for much of my photography I enjoy the smaller size/weight.  I briefly had a 40-150 2.8 but returned it as just too big.

I think you'd be happier with the single lens solution of 12-100 for travel than having the 12-40 (or 12-35) and 35-100.  But that's just my opinion.

I wanted to add that for my upcoming trip, I will be going on a safari, so the type of photography I would do would be nature/wildlife.

But I also are considering the options mentioned for other travels. The Oly 40-150 always take up so much room (+ weight).

I have the PL100-400 and will ONLY bring it traveling if I know it will get significant use.

I have the P35-100/2.8 and ALWAYS bring it traveling due to its size and useful focal lengths.

O40-150/2.8 is relatively close in size to the PL100-400.  If I had that for my short tele zoom, I would have to apply the same pre-travel consideration as with the PL100-400 due to the size/weight.

As for switching from the 12-40 + 40-150 to the 12-100...in light of the size/weight of those two lenses, I'd certainly consider it.

Buy 40-150mm f/4-5.6 R.

Cheap, and great for travel, and no need to compromise PRO to go for 35-100mm.

If you can get to go with f/4, then that is the best choice.

I should mention that I have the PL 100-400 for telephoto purposes.

Then get the 12-100mm, you get great match with that.

Sure you don't have a small and light like 12-40mm for general photography.

And you don't have that f/2.8 for 40-150mm range when needed or f/4 for 56-210mm when needed, but that 12-100mm does great combination.

That's exactly why I opted for the P35-100/2.8 instead of the O40-150/2.8.  I knew I would be reluctant to carry it on all my trips.

P12-35/2.8, P35-100/2.8, P8-18/2.8-4 and P15/1.7 are my standard travel lenses.  PL25/1.4, PL100-400 and Rokinon 7.5 fisheye come along on an as-needed basis.

Thanks for your opinion/analysis. It’s kind of what am thinking of doing. But I am afraid of missing the f/2.8 especially that I won’t be carrying a tripod.

I think I would keep the Oly 12-40 f2.8, and get the Panasonic 35-100 f2.8.  They are both excellent (well I've never had the 12-40 but the press here is good) and both a stop faster than the 12-100 which could come in handy.  Then you are good from 12 to 400mm and would be hard pressed to go lighter for all that range.

Hum! Just when I think I should get the 12-100, you make me rethink the whole thing with your good points. I am like a yo-yo! Thanks for your 2 cents. Much appreciated.

I should mention that I have the PL 100-400 for telephoto purposes.

If you are looking for the simplest (yet powerful) package, I would have just the 12-100 and a semi wide f1.7/ 1.8 (15 or 17mm).

100-150mm does not feel to me like enough to warrant an extra lens just for that (if I thought I needed longer, the PL 100-400 would come with).

F2.8 is nice but it means 2 lenses for your commonly used focal lengths and my EM1.2 has good 3200 ISO (RAW processing) and I think G9 as well.

The DUAL IS of the 12-100 and EM1.2 will take back a stop or two of low light / ISO ability over a non stabilised f2.8 lens.... effectively for a low light (ISO) landscape it makes the 12-100 a f2.8 or better lens compared to say a 12-40mm f2.8 lens.

I take an 8mm f1.8 Pro, 8-18mm PL, 17mm f1.2 Pro, 60mm f2.8 Macro, 12-100mm Pro and 100-400 PL when I travel (plus filters, flash TG5 Tough camera and small tripod) and it all complies with strictest carry on airline rules and in a backpack that fits under the seat in front. If I was flying to shoot a wedding, I would add my 25 f1.2 Pro, 12-40mm Pro and more flashes plus a spare EM1 and take out the 100-400 PL and 60mm Macro.

Even though I have 6 lenses in my backpack, the 12-100 deals with almost everything during daylight hours outside and unless I see something absolutely stunning that needs a wider lens, or birds, it stays on the camera.

The 12-100 works for me but I can see some people would rather do a 12-40 2.8 plus 35-100 2.8 as the 12-100 is substantial. Or get a 12-60 PL as a compromise. If you can get to a shop to handle a 12-100, go have feel and look.

Go for Olympus 12 100mm, that is tactical short midlong range, you will not willing to change often during the travel,

For wild + life, you can use PL 100 400mm for great wild shooting sensation.

That's it, Greattt!!!!

In my case, for the safari, the Oly 12-100 would go on an Em10 mk2 because I would mount the PL 100-400 on the G9. So less benefits for that trip. But for other travels, it would be on the G9.

I do wonder about the extra light offered by the Pana 35-100 and Oly 12-40 at the beginning and end of the day on the safari. But I don’t know if one stop will make a difference.

Quite often on safari, at night or dusk, you will be driven up close to a kill or a leopard up a tree. In this case, a 75mm f1.8 will be what you want. F2.8 will still be too slow and longer than 75mm not needed. For sunset red skies, dusty mist dawn landscapes etc, a DUAL IS f4 is fine.

Sure you don't have a small and light like 12-40mm for general photography.

And you don't have that f/2.8 for 40-150mm range when needed or f/4 for 56-210mm when needed, but that 12-100mm does great combination.

Thanks for your opinion/analysis. It’s kind of what am thinking of doing. But I am afraid of missing the f/2.8 especially that I won’t be carrying a tripod.

I have the Olympus 12-40 f/2.8, the 12-100 f/4, and the PL100-400.

The 12-100 and the 100-400 make a great combo. I haven’t missed the f/2.8 of the 12-40 one bit, the Sync IS of the 12-100 is that good .... with both my E-M1 II and my Pen F.
