Samples for Panasonic 20 F1.7 lowlight.
1

I've recently got Panasonic GX85 and as part of few of lenses that I've collected for it, one of it is Panasonic 20F1.7

I've read multiple threads on how slow Pan20F1.7 is in low light situation. And I was not sure what to expect so tried it out during this years new year get together for friends.

Keep in mind what you see here is all shot with GX85 + Pan20F1.7 with whatever is available light. And I'm still new to GX85 so learning how it works. In terms of AF - I didn't have any issues with Pan20F1.7 - something that lot of people talk about it here. Slower shutter is intentional for some of motion blur.

I’ve only had mine hunt for focus trying to use it indoors in very low light conditions.

As for the slow focusing, you’ll only notice it when repeatedly going from the very extremes of focus where the worm drive AF mech is the limiting factor.

I’ve never been anything other than delighted with the output from my 20mm Pannycake and it lives on the front of my carry GM5.

Re: Samples for Panasonic 20 F1.7 lowlight.

I only have experience with MFT bodies (and an RX100m3), but in general I would say that my p20 f1.7ii is doing quite ok in lowlight. I guess you can adjust your settings (e.g. shutter speed, focus mode, etc.), but it's just if you compare the performance with the panasonic 25mm f1.7 or the panasonic leica 15mm f1.7, it is indeed a bit slower/hunts a bit more.

With the other two lenses you can basically use the auto mode and just fire away and usually the pictures are good to stellar. But I am almost inclined to say that this is just, because those lenses are reaally fast! This often times works with the 20mm lens as well, but sometimes you have to adjust a bit manually...

Me neither and what matters is the IQ of this little gem. If I had to list ONE lens for me to choose micro 4/rds this 20mm would be THE ONE

I agree Harold for me the 20mm is the epitome of what m43 is all about by a long way my favourite ,and most used m43 lens . I have never found its AF to be an issue and I have shot 1000's of shots in every kind of light on several Panasonic bodies

I bought it with an Olympus E PL1 body.

I have always loved it and because of the gorgeous images it produced, my micro43 bodies and lenses multiplied.

I have noticed that it does focus faster on Panasonic bodies (GH2 and GX7)

I got a little frustrated with the hunting for focus in low light and bought the Olympus 17mm, which does capture focus very quickly in low light, BUT, I still prefer the output from the 20mm and love the focal length.

Good to see I am not alone in this linking the 20mm. I have been a photographer for 25 years and early on, I discovered that a focal length is my favorite focal length EVER and my most used when I am not shooting models

If Ricoh had a GR with a 40mm FOV equivalent , I probably could use that camera for like 80% of my non-model shoots

I agree with you.

The 20/1.7 focuses quite well with newer (i.e. GX7 and newer) Panasonics that have the -4EV focus capability.  My Panny cams before that did have difficulty focusing, and hunted all the time.

Nice photos!

Not sure where you are located (profile does not say) but many of these scenes look remarkably similar to places I've made photographs in Alabama and Mississippi -- although almost always without the snow.

I'm based in upstate NY - so its more rural and more scenic in my part of countryside compared to downstate.

Re: mjoshi

I have the Panny 20mm. I really like it. Seems to focus fine, although, I have not used it for BIF or indoor ice hockey.

Unfortunately, the supposed issues surrounding this lens are simply one of many instances substantiating the fact that a good percentage of what you read on the internet is simply blown way out of proportion, or worse, inaccurate. Many of these "exaggerated" statements are perpetuated by people who are merely echoing what they hear. It's very disheartening, especially because people seem to suck it all down and base their decisions on perpetuated mis-truths. Here's a personal experience. I'm in the process of selling a Sony A6500. A guy contacts me about and asks how many shutter clicks. 6470. He says, oh, that many? I was hoping to get less. Okaaaay. It's pathetic.

Agreed, internet is very good at amplifying negative point of view.
