s100 - stuck lens - suggestion to China visitors

A while back I got a S100 with a stuck lens (really common issues with the S100). As a S90 owner I love the image quality and that it can fit in my jeans pocket.

Anyway, one can buy the lens for about $20 on eBay. But changing a lens on that type camera should be left to the very brave.

So on a trip to Shanghai I went to this photo stuff only department store, it's actually two buildings. I gave the camera to a repair shop on an upper floor and they fixed it for a reasonable RMB 200 (about $30 , that's for lens and service). It was ready the next day.

They do all types of cameras there. Not sure about their success rate, but for me it ended very well and the S100 works perfectly again.

This is the place:

Xing Guang Photographic Equipment City (星光摄影器材城)
286/288 Luban Lu / 鲁班路
Subway Line 4, Luban Lu exit 1, walk 5 min

There are also smaller places like that in Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

Generally China is getting quite expensive in recent years, but repairs are still pretty cheap. It's good for mobile phones too. Had also a cracked screen (digitizer) replaced for $12

That store sounds a great find!

I had that problem with my S100. It was fairly soon after I had bought it so Canon fixed it. I love my S100 and it’s still the camera I have with me most, as it is so easily pocketable and it gives lovely results.

Glad you like it. It's not shop, it's a mall with 2 or 3 buildings. This guy (not me) did a video about it. Matches my experience.

One thing I like to add, I don't think equipment is cheap in China. Certainly not compare to the US. Repair I found cheap. 2nd hand stuff I would be really careful. Places in China can have very high humidity, you can get fungi in lenses.

And another video of the same place:
