The SX60 is a great camera..
3

..had received my SX60 a few days ago, just had the chance to test the camera..

..the SX60 camera has a good quality feeling while holding in the hand..

..after going through the camera's menus, below are some first pictures taken, they are sooc jpeg's..

..have placed a 58mm lens filter adapter, and used the Hoya HD3 UV lens filter.. did not notice any vignetting at the SX60 widest pictures..

..SX60, sooc jpeg..

..SX60, sooc jpeg..

..SX60, sooc jpeg..

..while I feel the SX60 is a great camera, but I feel the SX70 is even better..

..and I shall enjoy using both the SX60 & SX70 cameras to take pictures..

..Cheers..

Wow!  Very interesting thank you.  Did you use any in-camera sharpening?  And is it  possible that you can post some photo's taken with the telephoto end of the lens please.  I would like to see the sharpness at the long end of the lens.  Maybe I should take another look at the SX60 if the price is right.

Regards

Re: The SX60 is a great camera..

..I will need to more test shots at the long end of the zoom..

..one thing can affect the image quality at the tele end is the atmospheric distortions..

..at least for now, the SX60 can be said to be a great camera (in it's class) for general photography..

..Cheers..

SX60 settings

Looks fine, congrats with your new SX60. I'll suggest that you set "High ISO NR" to 'low' (manual p. 74) and use "Super Fine" JPEG compression (P. 90). To change sharpness, contrast etc. choose "Custom Color" (p. 77-78). Setting go from -2 to +2, default is 0. I use reduced settings to get a less processed, more 'RAW-like' starting-point for editing afterwards, but you can do whatever you prefer, of course. And as always, keep the ISO as low as possible in the situation, important with such a small sensor (your last image was shot at ISO 200, which wasn't necessary).

At this stage I have sharpness on +2 (max)!!!!!, contrast on +1 and red, green and blue also on +1. The rest are all on default (0).  NR is on "Low'".  And ISO on 80 as far as possible.  I try not to go above 400.  Because sharpness is so high, I often have to soften some photo's in post.

..Thanks to both Steen Bay & HDBCT for mentioning about the Sharpening adjustments..

..and thanks Steen Bay for the tips.. I'm going to be testing/experimenting with both the Sharpening & Noise Reduction settings..

..Here's a couple of the SX60 full zoom examples..

..have experimented with various sharpening and noise reduction settings..

..found to set the My Colors to "Off", and set the Noise Reduction to "Standard", seems to work the best..

..the below are full size sooc jpeg images.. best to only zoom in up to 50% when viewing.. otherwise deep pixel peeping won't be so pretty..

..these pictures will represent probably the capabilities of the SX60 jpegs.. for better qualities, then can do post processing of the Jpeg or Raw files..

..SX60, sooc jpeg, @ 63mm (efov)..

..SX60, sooc jpeg, @ 1365mm (efov) full zoom..

..SX60, sooc jpeg, @ 1365mm (efov) full zoom..

..Cheers..

Thank you very much for the time and effort you have put into the SX60 and SX70 so far. I am amazed at the sharpness and IQ of the last one at ISO 1000 without pixel peeping. Did a little noise noise reduction on it and was quite happy with the result. Now here's the thing:  I see you have all the "super" super zooms one can buy!  I can get a SX60 and a P900 for about the same price.  I am not into birding (yet), more landscapes and wild life and anyhing that catches the eye. Do you have any recommendations from your experience with these  two cameras.  I am a bit weary of the P900 because I know that initially there were some LCD screen problems if i remember correctly. Is that something of the past?

..They are both good cameras (SX60 & P900)..

..it really depends on one's own preferences..

..I have a tendency to go with the SX60 for casual snappers, as I'm really impressed with the pictures it takes..

..however, if going to be shooting lot's of birds & wildlifes, especially at the long end of the zoom range, then the P900 will have an edge..

..both cameras will make you happy..

..Cheers..

Re: The SX60 is a great camera..

Thanks for posting these, jshen808!

Not sure if it was weather or atmospheric conditions were much different,  ...but i see more details in the trees on this shot, than the SX70 similar shot.

I have no feelings about these , just observations.

thanks

The SX60 is not a great camera.

I'm glad you are happy with your camera.

However, my opinion mirrors that of the consensus: the SX60 did not produce good quality images.

If you check this forum you will read a lot of complaints, and comments hoping the SX70 is not as bad as the SX60.

But rather than spending time reading years of complaints it may be more fun to use a camera that you enjoy.
