I take two pictures with an ordinary DSLR and then combine them into an anaglyphic stereo image using the 3DSteroidPro App running on a Android tablet. An anaglyphic stereo image requires that the viewer wear glasses with different colored filters in front of each eye, red for the left and cyan for the right.

There is a lot of good info in this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereo_photography_techniques

Just to add, that when taking the two photos, the best results are achieved by moving the camera sideways with out the camera moving up or down or tilting and only move the camera about 2 inches. By concentrating on doing this part right, you will need much less alignment in the software app.

Re: 3D & stereo....??

You can get a good explanation of the process in this tutorial.

The easy way to take 3D images is with a 3D camera with two lenses and sensors or with a "lens" that actually has two separate side by side lenses to project two images to the film or sensor.

The Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 camera is very popular for 3D because of the simplicity and quality of its two 10 M pixel images. You can get one for anywhere from about $350 to over $600 used.

There are also mirror devices that attach to your lens and send two separate views to the camera but some, like this one, don't give you the same inter image separation as your eyes do.

You can also use the cha cha method. Take one photo then shift your body 65mm (about 2.6" to the side and take another image. For subjects beyond about 15' shift a bit further. For macro shift less.

You can view 3D/Stereo images several ways.

A 3D viewer. virtual reality viewer, or 3D TV can be used to see 3D/Stereo images. There was even a post on this tread recently about a phone that shows 3D images. Here is an old left/right side by side image viewer I bought about 50 years ago. It can be used to view 3D cards or you can stick your phone in it and view side by side images.

Here is a new one for phones.

Anaglyph images are another that involve coloring one image red and the other blue then you use glasses with color filters so that each eye only sees one of the two images. These are anaglyph images.

With practice you can learn to view side by side images. Doing this with the right image on the right and the left on the left is hard to do since each eye must be looking outward. It is easier to learn to do it with images that are exchanged left to right and crossing your eyes.

Look at your finger just in front of your nose and your eyes are crossed. Shift the focus to the screen without uncrossing your eyes. Start with small images and work your way up to larger ones. These are cross eyed 3D images.

My goal is to project the images into a large screen or TV...

If you use a 3D camera that takes two digital images like the Fuji W3 then what you get is a single digital image that contains both the left and right images. The file format is .MPO. This camera come with some software but StereoPhotoMaker is more useful.

If you take the images using the cha cha method you get two individual image files.  If you use dual lenses to put two side by side images on a single camera sensor then you need to crop the image to give you the two separate images.

You can use the free StereoPhotoMaker software to combine individual images into a single side by side JPG, either left/right or switched to right/left for cross eyed viewing. The software can also combine two images into a .MPO file format.

The best 3D TVs very rapidly show the right and left eye images. You wear glasses that synchronize with the TV so each eye only sees the appropriate image and your brain combines the images to produce a 3D image. If you have a 3D TV like this then it may be able to display .MPO files as 3D images. I don't have a 3D TV and don't know if they can display any other image format in 3D.

If you have a regular TV then you can use cross eyed images, or anaglyph images if you have the red/green (actually cyan color) glasses.

eBay - Anaglyph Glasses

It took practice but I can view cross eyed image on my 24" or 25" computer monitor or on my 42" TV. I do this since I don't get any color artifacts the way you do with anaglyph images.

For cross eyed viewing on my normal TV the two side by side images must be switched and saved as a single JPG image that will be displayed. Since both images are displayed from a single file each individual image will only be half the width of the TV.

There is a limit to how big an image people can view cross eyed. The relative size of the images varies with distance. If you get too close to the TV the relative size of the images gets to be too large and viewing cross eyed images in 3D becomes impossible.
