G7 Video Interview Setup
2

I've started an ongoing project at work interviewing people (photo of setup below). The videos are supposed to live on the internet and are not meant to be pro quality--just not completely crappy looking (or sounding). So I did the first one today... I had the G7 with the Rode Videomicro, a Zoom recorder and cheap wired lav for audio, and a cheap Chinese LED light on a light stand for fill light (but in fact didn't use it because I am dumb). I also had my iPhone recording just as a back up.

Some thoughts...

Focus: I was worried about the autofocus on the G7, but I just set the manual focus with focus peaking and a 5.6 aperture, didn't touch it again, and the interview subject stayed in focus the whole time. She wasn't moving around too much, but nor was she stationary, in fact I'm positive the face/eye detection would not have been as effective.

Audio: I spent a lot of time stressing about getting good quality audio, and admittedly the audio recorder I have may be overkill for this project. The Zoom audio sounds great, but I also listened to the audio from the G7 paired with the Rode Videomicro, and to be honest, it's probably good enough. Granted, this is in a very quiet room without a lot of weird ambient noise, but just to say that the audio I heard out of the camera (at least to my unprofessional ears) sounded decent!

Also... thanks to people on this forum who had given me some advice about the G7 video in a thread long, long ago.

Hope to build on this as I gain more experience, confidence, and skill. Video is a new world for me.
