Difference between Lumix G7 and G80

Though Panasonic has not come outright and said it, the G85 is the successor to the G7. More a refinement than something new entirely, both cameras share seemingly identical bodies and offer twin control dials, plenty of customizable buttons and fully articulating touch interfaces.

But the G85 is rather more grand: it's weather-sealed with a magnesium alloy front plate, and offers a new electromagnetic shutter to combat shutter shock, an upgraded electronic viewfinder and 5-axis in-camera IS.

Like the Panasonic GX85, the G85 uses a 16MP chip with no anti-aliasing filter. We found image quality from the GX85 to be slightly improved over that of past Panasonic cameras using the same 16MP chip with AA filters (like the G7).

The G85 also uses the same redesigned shutter mechanism as the GX85, which we found to effectively mitigate shutter shock, an issue that affected the Panasonic G7.

I've added bold to the five main upgrades.  The G80 also offers Dual IS with many Panasonic lenses, where the camera's image stabilization works together with the lens' image stabilization.  The G80 is a very substantial improvement over the G7.

The review of the G80 said said it was "the camera the G7 should have been."

It has a new shutter mechanism that greatly reduces shutter shock.

It is weather proof.

It has in camera focus stacking, the G7 doesn''t.

There's probably more.  I used to have a G7 but jumped from that to a G9, so I only listed what I'm sure of.

I endorse the other comments (I have both bodies).

It's a shame that the improvements come with increased size and weight, but I guess that's the price you have to pay).  It's why I won't be moving to a G9.

Maybe I should be looking for a used G80 and sell the G7

the main difference is that you would want to get a g80 if you shoot a lot or need a higher quality cam.

the g7 advantages are a plastic lightweight build and no image stabilization.   so if you dont need that then get the g80.

Lots of answers already, and I never had a G7, but you can see my gear list in my profile. I've used TOO many cameras, and I would say the G80 is one of the best I have ever used.

Cons: I would like better C-AF, but it has workable C-AF. I would like 24MP instead of 16MP. I would like double the battery life, but it has better battery life than the GX85.

Other than that, it's fabulous. Handling, IQ, pixel sharpness, IBIS, Viewfinder, etc.
