My, how you've grown...

I don't have the patience for natural history, as a rule. But I will admit to a bit of a fascination with fungi. (You don't have to stalk mushrooms, they won't run away, they're big enough to see and small enough not to be dangerous.)

I first photographed this specimen about three weeks ago.

25mm lens; tripod.

A week later, it had developed into a different shape.

75mm, hand-held (high ISO and shutter speed)

I thought it would probably deteriorate after this. I was away last weekend, but today, two weeks on, it's now looking like this:

25mm, tripod.

and, from another angle:

25mm, hand-held (IBIS on)

... and I was rather taken with this view of it:

25mm, hand-held (IBIS on)

The tree stump it's growing on (devouring, probably) is a cedar, I think. And, no, I don't intend trying to see if it's edible.

Great idea to photograph them a week apart. It tells a good story and i love their colour.

How come in the first image there is an out of focus area in the middle?

It didn't really start as an idea, but they are very close to home, so I see them develop.

Well spotted in the first one.  I stitched two shots, each focused in a different place.  I wanted to keep the aperture fairly wide as the background is unattractive.  I wanted it as blurred as possible.  I probably should have stitched in a couple more but, as I said, I don't really have the patience.
