Canon EOS 300D -350D - clicks??

How can I determine how many clicks on my Canons EOS 300D or 350D?

Or is that only possible on EOS 650D and later?

Hi geneacom,

There have been rumors that using certain hex editor tools can determine the shutter count of older cameras including the above mentioned cameras. Your best bet is to perform a YouTube search and see what comes up. Alternatively you could try your local camera store.

Best of luck.

Re: Canon EOS 300D -350D - clicks??

The shutter count's only accessible via a special computerized tool that the Canon shops have that connects via the hot-shoe. There's no way for the average person to access it.

Does it really matter? Those camera models are ancient, cost next to nothing when bought used, and probably won't be used for taking that many more pictures. If the shutter is still moving smoothly and not producing light leaks -- look for white arcs in the image at super-fast shutter speeds like 1/2000 or higher -- it'll probably last long enough.

The 300D is more prone to sub-mirror hinge-pin failure than to shutter failure. The 300D's shutter is also unusually susceptible to damage from old flash guns, because it's only rated to 6V on the firing pin. So if you're looking at a 300D, you might want to be sure it can fire a flash. But I can't imagine buying a 300D these days, with its limited controls.

Re: Canon EOS 300D -350D - clicks??

The reason I was asking is that lately my Canon EOS 300D is showing some problems.
Usually after one or two shots the camera shows an error and stops. After shut down and restart I can again make one or two shots and then stops again .
I can repeat this everytime, but it is quite ennoying ...

My knee-jerk reaction when one of these older cameras starts behaving wacky is to suspect that either the processor is confused, the date/time battery is going dead, or both.

I'd suggest removing both batteries -- the main rechargeable and the CR2016 "button" date/time battery -- from the camera and letting it sit for a few minutes before putting them back in. That will allow the processor to reset.

If that works for you, you might consider buying a new CR2016 date/time battery, since those are usually good for just a few years -- the manual says five years -- and that one's probably over a decade old.

It's also possible the main rechargeable battery is losing its ability to hold a charge, but that's usually a lot more obvious.

Usually after one or two shots the camera shows an error and stops.

What error is it showing?

Several reasons for using a 300D now.

I bought one a few months ago for $30 on eBay.  I was testing A.I. Gigapixel and wanted to shoot the same scene on both the modern cameras that I now use and on the cameras I used, back when I used them.  This is easier than trying to duplicate things I shot in 2003 with my modern cameras!

A $30 DSLR is also a real good bad weather camera (if you also declare one of your lenses to be sacrificial.)
