Re: G7 good enough or G85

The G7 is OK but the G80/85 is a far better camera in terms of feel, sealing, dual IS, more 4K features and the new shutter is a fantastic step forward. There have been bargain offers recently and Black Friday is coming up. I find the 12-60mm lens has a great range for city work and, of course, maintains the sealing. If you can find a good offer on the G85 I’d certainly go for it.

Re: G7 good enough or G85

I have a G7 and it's a superb camera. I did buy a used G80 last summer, but there were problems with the connection pins for the lenses and I had to reluctantly return it a few weeks later.

From my time with the G80 I can say that the lack of AA filter makes a definite improvement to photo IQ. Everything was so much sharper. The IBIS was a dream for video, and useful for stills too.

I liked these features so much I picked up a GX80 (which has IBIS and no AA filter) as a secondary cam, and I find I'm now using it more than the G7.

At the moment I'm holding off for a successor to the G80 as I do prefer the DSLR style, but every time I see a thread like this a little voice inside my head tells me I should get one now.

I have the G80 and love it, still image quality is great and 4k video superb - dual image stabalizing with the 12-60 kit lens is a boon. To my eyes the 4k footage of the G80 looks better than that from my Sony RX10 IV.

Looking to add a 4/3 camera to my collection. It will mainly be used for 4K video.

Leaning heavily towards a G85 but with the price of the G7, curious how much of a difference there is between the two? How do the low light 4k performances compare? Is the G85 significantly better than the G7 when on a tripod?

Everyone gave you good answers but I think nobody answered the direct question. I've owned them both, of course the G85 is a big upgrade in terms of features. On a tripod for video there would no difference. You might consider a GH4 for solely 4k video on a tripod, it'd cost about the same as a G85.

True enough, Greg, I still have them both.

Personally, I value flexibility and adaptability very highly - so that's why I'd go for the G85.  Others will have different priorities.

If memory serves there is a video from The Camera Store that shows that the G7 is slightly better than the GH4 in low light.

one more thing weather sealing on G85.

I can attest to this. The G85 is really, really good in rough weather. I mainly bought the G85 with the also-weathersealed 12-60/3.5-5.6 for street shooting in rainstorms (and also to play with videography) and it has never let me down.

One thing that it did highlight was my need for a proper rainproof bag. It was a new experience for me, being more worried about my bag and its contents than my camera when the rain came down.

There are three major improvements to G85 vs G7:

  1. shock-free mechanical shutter
  2. IBIS
  3. weather resistance

IBIS is a pretty big deal if you're interested in shooting video but don't want to work on tripod or stabilizer rig.

Also, the G85 with the 12-60 is a very versatile kit with a solid lens. I would say that it's worth the difference in price, especially if you want to use it for handheld video.

I still maintain that the G85 with the 12-60 kit lens is the best all-around camera under US$1000 new, from any manufacturer, particularly for video. It's excellent value for money.
