New Lumix G7 user here. Having some basic trouble.

I was using my new G7 yesterday for the first time. Couldn't get to adjust shutter speed or aperture while shooting ! Tried fiddling around and in one particular mode i could adjust the shutter speed and aperture but it was having no effect on the video. Whatttttt !!!! So perplexed. Im having to use it like an auto point and shoot. Coming from years of canon DSLR usage, you always had full control during pre-shot and during the recording also. Also the shutter speed didn't want to go beyond 1/250, that normal.

All this in video as im only interested in video. To top it all off this camera shoots video in all mode dial positions too and in what seem to be photo modes too. This means each of these modes offers different kind of control over the video ? Just realized it has shot even bright rooms with lots of light @3200 ISO. On its own. Am i missing something here ? How do i get into a video mode where i can see the LCD panel and adjust my shutter/aperture/iso and be done with it. I would also like to be able to see the shutter speed/aperture/iso as its recording and maybe change it as its recording just as i can with my canon DSLR.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7

I don't have a G7 (I have a GX85), but it also has a movie mode (AKA Creative Video Mode) on the mode dial. It's the symbol with a movie camera and an "M". This is the only mode that actually controls all the video settings.

Note that in all the PASM modes on the mode dial, you can still press record button, but the settings you choose do not effect the video (rather video is full auto).

Once in the Creative Video Mode, you can tap the top right corner on touch screen and it'll allow you to switch between P A S M for your video settings (alternatively you can go in Menu > Motion Picture > Exposure Mode). See page 126.

ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/camera/om/dmc-g7_adv_en_om.pdf

You can then change aperture/shutter speed/ISO etc as you do with stills. You can also use the touch screen menu on the right side to change these settings if you want to minimize noise from the buttons.

Maybe its because you have a different version but im not able to get anything by tapping on the right corner. There's no soft button there to tap. On the right edge center were some slide out tab menus. In that the SS F-Stop all are greyed out and not select-able.

Sorry, I had a typo. I meant top left. It's the movie camera symbol and by default there is a "P" next to it (for P mode).

You can refer to the manual linked on page 126

Thanks Jake ! I figured it out. Its the button that you have shown but inside that seems to be a sub menu showing 3 options S (for shutter priority), A (for aperture priority) and M (for full manual). Had to choose M and now im all set. :). Too bad i didn't know this yesterday, went out and shot a lot of stuff, all on full auto. Its embarrassing after filming with DSLRs all these years. Bruised dignity !. LOL.

Re: New Lumix G7 user here. Having some basic trouble.

The base ISO in the camera is only 200 ISO. No 100 ISO or am i missing that menu somewhere ?

Thanks

The true base ISO is 200. If you enable extended ISO you can get 100 ISO, but it's not a true ISO. The threads says ISO 100 is also only available in stills, and not in video.

You can enable extended ISO in menu > rec > extended iso. See page 177:

Hi Jake,

Would you then recommend using extended ISO. Or leaving it off is better in your usage experience.

I don't use that extended ISO at all so can't help you there. I would defer to the thread linked previously.

Re: New Lumix G7 user here. Having some basic trouble.

Hi OP,

I've used this to learn the camera: https://youtu.be/IV12EHcmXNc

Great tutorial by Tony Northrup. Even thought I'd used M43 cameras before, this gave me a good grounding in the Panasonic G7 menus and how I'd do stuff I knew from other cameras in it's environment.

Hope it helps, and enjoy the camera. It's a great one.

Hi Fuchalmania,

Thanks for the link !

Ive seen Northrup's tutorials and reviews on the Mavic Air drone since i own one. Was surprised to see him covering the G7.

I wanted to ask if theres a way to hard reset this camera back to factory conditions. Like how it came out of the box. Because when i hit reset it only does a partial reset asking if i want to retain face recognition profiles and all that.

Where and how do i do a total hard reset ?

Reason for doing this being that as a beginner ive gone into several menu trees and fiddled around trying to get things to work my way. I would like to undo all the irrelevant settings i must've messed with.
