G7 a great inexpensive camera
1

I found an almost new G7 with kit lens for sale very cheaply on a local website. The woman had bought it for a college video project but found it overly complex.

I was looking for a smallish capable camera and the G7 fit the bill. So far Ive been very impressed with the results. I agree with other comments that the camera does feel very plasticky, but thats why its so light and easy to handle. The ergonomics and features are excellent. I downloaded the firmware update 2.0 and that adds to the feature list.

The kit lens is OK but not amazing. I'll look out for a 12-35 as an upgrade.

I almost always carry a camera, and my G7 came with a nice Lowepro Event Messenger 100, but I wanted something much smaller for just a camera and spare battery. I tried out a Lowepro Format 110 and Its a great fit and very small. Exactly what I wanted for $30.

Results from the camera have been really impressive. I love the touch screen for detailed focus and easy access to menus. First one Ive ever used and I like it.

The WiFi and iPhone integration is a bit slow and clunky, but works OK

Only shot a few test videos at 4k. Really good results. I usually shoot B&W stills and the G7 is so much better than my old Leica Digilux-6.

Overall, it's an excellent camera. The Ideal travel companion,  and very easy to live with.

Thanks for the report. Which kit lens did you get with your camera?

LOL, imagine how those people who bought the GH5 at launch "to learn video" are doing.

Agree, the G7 is a fantastic and very good value camera - especially second hand. I'm not planning on upgrading mine any time soon, does everything I want and then some.

I agree.  I have the G6.  But, if I didn't have it, I'd go for the G7.  At the prices now, especially second hand, it's a good value.

I'm always surprised at the comments about a plasticky feel. I have a GH3 as well and I often have to take a second look to see which camera I have got! Anyhow, I love my G7 with its lighter weight and focus peaking as well as shooting up to iso 3200 with electronic shutter. This has elevated it to my main camera when my intention had been for it to be back up to the GH3!

I can completely agree with you. My primary camera is an Oly OM-D E-M1 mk2, however I wanted an extra body for redundancy and extra flexibility (lens #1 on Oly / lens #2 on Panny), so I went out to get another M4/3 body and ended up at the G7: it's offers an unbeatable value for money and the ergonomics are very good. I eventually found one at a Hong Kong based webshop that charged approximately €370 for a brand new G7 + a 14-42mm kit lens. For me it was a no brainer and ordered one. Highly recommended!
