Hi Guys !

I got the new cam and i like it. At least for the 4K. I will take your general consensus and go with dedicated m34 lenses because based on what you guys say, i think ill only benefit on longer focal ranges rather than wider lenses.

In that light is there a prime 7mm or so which would cost quite less and is directly compatible with the G7 while giving auto-focus and aperture control via camera body ?

If you are okay with manual focus/aperture, the cheapest rectilinear prime is the 8mm f/4 from SLR Magic ($170 new; was available a while back for $130), but its a softer lens with field curvature (although perhaps okay for video).

The Laowa 7.5mm f/2 is much sharper, but costs a lot more. Note Laowa is launching a cine version of this lens too (probably with declicked aperture).

My UWA budget solution personally was a Ricoh DW-6 0.79x wide adapter mounted with 37mm to 43mm step-up ring on my 12-32mm lens. Gives a 9.5-25mm with full AF and aperture control. Got the idea from this thread:

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3710447

Hard to find a DW-6 at a decent price (I found used one on Ebay), but it seems Adorama has some for $60.

Hi Jake !

I found a DW-6 on amazon in my country costing USD 500.

There seems to be a Samyang 7.5mm for MFT mounts. I wonder if that would work to cover a 10x10 room from one corner of the room ? I dont mind panning a little too to get that on the video.

The DW-6 requires a 12-32mm lens though (which was included as a kit with my camera). You said 12-32mm is really expensive in your country, so it might not be an option for you. Here in USA, the 12-32mm is around $100-150 USD for a dekitted one (from people got it from a kit and didn't want to keep it).

The Samyang 7.5mm f/3.5 is a fisheye lens. It'll have very wide coverage, but lots of distortion.

The SLRMagic 8mm f/4 is probably the best option for you, if it's available in your country:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1322738-REG/slr_magic_slr8m4_8mm_f_4_lens.html

How about this one ? Just for a few minutes of room interior shots.

That one is for Fuji X mount. You need one for Micro Four Thirds mount. And note it says it's also fisheye lens so there will be a lot of distortion.

This is the cheapest rectilinear lens I can find on Amazon India. It is the Micro Four Thirds 9-18mm f/4-5.6. This one will have full AF and electronic aperture since it is native to MFT.

I haven't used it, but you can find user reviews here and there is one sample image (fisheye distortion very obvious, which I'm not sure if you are going for).

Hi Jake,

Ill look at the flickr images now. But im only using it for video primarily. The Olympus which you suggested does auto-focus with focus peaking etc is it. All features like what are available with the kit lens 14-42mm are available on the Oly too ?

Yes, for that 9-18mm lens, all the MFT features available on the kit lens (and other native MFT lenses) would be available. Just make sure you by the Micro Four Thirds version (not the Four Thirds version for DSLRs).

Re: Pansonic Lumix G7 -Adapter Ring Question (To Use My Canon EF-S Lenses)

Hi Jake,

The price for the Oly 9-18mm is around 510 usd and for 772 usd the 7-14mm Pany aspherical lens is available (https://www.amazon.in/dp/B0028Y5GKK/?coliid=I19X4C2M57Z2H1&colid=2ZXG1GED9D77Z&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it).

Is it worth opting for that ? 2mm extra on the wide end gives a big width difference right ? Its also rectilinear i think. Will the image quality for video be better on the pany lens ?

Yes 2mm extra on 7mm vs 9mm makes a big difference. The diagonal FOV for 7mm is 114 degrees vs 100 degress for 9mm. Yes both lenses are rectilinear.

You can find a comparison here:

https://admiringlight.com/blog/panasonic-7-14mm-vs-olympus-9-18mm/

https://admiringlight.com/blog/panasonic-7-14mm-vs-olympus-9-18mm/2/

The 7-14mm is a much bigger lens (has built in hood and a bulbous front element) and it does not have a front filter thread (so if you need to add a filter, you have to hack a solution). On Olympus bodies it is known to have purple blob flare (although does not appear to be the case for Panasonic bodies). However, it does have better corners and IQ than the 9-18mm and has a constant max aperture of f/4 (vs variable for 9-18mm).

You may also want to consider the 8-18mm f/2.8-4 if you are going to spend that much. The f/2.8 would be useful for shooting indoors when there is less light.

Re: Pansonic Lumix G7 -Adapter Ring Question (To Use My Canon EF-S Lenses)

If we look at F2.8 as an advantage, when shooting say a small kitchen wont getting everything in focus be a problem due to the shallow depth of field. So id have to up the aperture to about 4 which then brings us back to the same light sensitivity ? I might be wrong though.

Yeah, if you step down to f/4 then you lose the advantage. That said, wide angle lenses tend to have huge depth of field.

Using the DOF calculator, 8mm f/2.8 MFT lens focused at the hyperfocal distance of about 5 ft, the DOF extends from about 2.5 ft to infinity.

So it largely depends on how close you intend your subject to be.

You can play around with this DOF calculator (I used the Panasonic G3 as a stand-in for G7):

Jake, how much does 7mm on MFT translate to on an APSC sensor. 14mm ?
