These guys produce professional content and they make this free. And while many here despise the Northrups and claim they just want YouTube views, get with the program - this is how they make their living.

Enjoy, you will almost certainly learn something.

Life is too short to watch clickbait videos. Please give us a precis so as we do not have to watch them.

I much prefer the written word, it is much easier to skip the boring bits.

Maybe, just maybe, instead of expecting me to give you a precis of something you apparently have zero interest in, you could contribute to the thread by linking to "written word" articles that cover the same detail as a 2 hr video?

Thanks, I imagine that would be a big help for others of your disposition.

IMNHO the Northrups deserve every click they get; and these are most definitely NOT clickbait (which is where the title, description or thumbnail is misleading about the content). These are thoughtfully and professionally presented and instructive videos that are among the best of their genre (and are free).

For those who dislike watching videos, Panasonic has a Lumix Academy that offers 36 written articles for people to get started with Lumix cameras. There is a free registration (although you can find the links to all of them on google).

https://www.lumixgexperience.panasonic.co.uk/news/welcome-to-the-lumix-academy/#.W9OkYflKhQI

Sample of one here:

https://www.lumixgexperience.panasonic.co.uk/lumix-academy/finding-your-way-around-a-camera/

Personally I like the Panasonic advanced manual for the respective cameras. The page about buttons and dials got me up to speed on the camera quickly and I can use the search function to find out more information about any specific feature.

ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/camera/om/dmc-gx85_en_adv_om.pdf

For those OK with video, and want to learn about a specific Panasonic camera, Panasonic's training guides have short videos organized per topic, which may be much easier to digest than a long 2 hour video.

Thanks, OP.

I've used their tutorial videos for my EM5.2, EM1.2 and my son's G7. All really helpful, and they even index each video so you can jump to certain points.

I've found their introduction videos for photography also good. It's what my son used to understand ISO, aperture, shutter speed and their relationship to other.

Good post, mate.

Tip: most of their video provide "show notes", visible when you click to expand the "Description" portion of the youtube page.

For instance, the following is shown for the first video linked in the original post here

I thought so.

It amazes me that this subject polarises the forum in two ways:

A distaste for video of all kinds.

A dislike of Tony Northrup.

Both seem totally alien to me (okay, perhapsI can kind of see the Tony Northrup thing   )

But video is one of the best things to happen to photography (or any area of interest), whether for learning about photography and techniques, or in its own right.

I guess you haven't seen his latest video. Maybe Tony should stick to his guns and delete all the M43 tutorials on his channel since the format is going to die and we need to get the Sony A7 something. Not the Canon R because that isn't a pro camera.

Tony Northrup has no credibility! In one of his recent videos, he talks trash about UV/lens protection filters & how these cheap "plastic" filters hurt image quality. First of all, does anyone actually make plastic filters?

Then in the same video, he takes a 50mm lens & totally destroys the front element by scratching it up then shoots with it, commenting on how the scratches really haven't hurt the image quality. He then goes on to say that buying used lenses with scratched front glass can be quite a bargain.

This is the same guy who started off in this same video stating to NOT use UV/lens protection filters because they hurt image quality.

How can he have any credibility when he puts out videos like this?

Who is this person and why is there a need to promote them on this website? Anyone who is interested can subscribe.

The OP comes across as a fanboy.

Well cheap UV filters can cause ghosting, glare, decreased contrast and can introduce other aberrations. Basically the main problem that it causes (that doesn't apply to a scratched front element) is that it introduces another glass surface over the entire image that can have internal reflections and the glass may not be flat (which causes waviness in the bokeh and changes the flare pattern).

https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2017/06/the-comprehensive-ranking-of-the-major-uv-filters-on-the-market/

Of course if you get a decent multicoated filter, then the effect is negligible.

A scratched front element can also decrease contrast (if bad enough) and will affect flare when in direct sunlight. But small scratches would have almost no effect on IQ.

Tony was probably paid by Nikon to make that stupid video.  Anyone who makes videos for a living, lives off of ads, sponsors, and affiliate marketing and can only be trusted to lie for his paymasters.

He's completely correct on both of those counts. Roger over at LensRentals has written articles about the same topics with the same conclusions.

Because it pours more $$ in Roger's pockets

Any damaged lens means profit for Roger.

Then, shooting with a naked, large front element, is equal to going out in full sunshine and wind without any eye protection and opening eyes as wide as possible to be beaten by the aforementioned.

It is as stupid as it gets.

Tony perhaps has money to burn a forest coming from clicks of the one million losers, but not much common sense to lit even a candle.

He also brags about shooting full sun at mid day, to achieve a need to restore 10 stops of information from contrasts, despite that that practice with any larger lens literally cooks the insides of the camera, and can quickly permanently damage the sensor.

People are mostly listening to absolute doodles when it comes to photography. Therefore you deserve to become like them.

Instead of doing what those nincompoops are suggesting, why don't you outclass them – buy a new camera and a new lens, and then play eggs tapping with them against rocks, straightaway.

Be Tony's Tony, and Roger's Roger.

He really does not have any

He really does not have any; he is so confidently arrogant that those who know absolutely nothing (and there are many of them) trust his poise and position of hands, like dogs or puppies which do not understand the real meaning behind words, but recognise the visual command they watched 100x times before.

That is his puppy school, in which he yells nonsense, and pups then repeat after a while.

Perhaps understatement is the problem.  Not just some 'awe'  ... but full 'awe',  just replace the some with ful to get the word your are after

So I take you don't actually have any argument against them other than gut feelings? For all your bluster you're completely off base here.
