Don't expect such a lens to be anywhere near as hand-hold-able. The front element needs to have 4.5x the area; the lens needs to be longer, etc. Even a 600/5.6 DO prime, would be as big and as heavy, or a little more so, than a 400/4 DO with a 1.4x TC, and add to the zooming, and you're looking at something at least 7 pounds, minimum.

What I wonder about is whether Canon will eventually start making lenses slower than f/5.6, as AF ability at higher f-numbers improve, especially with mirrorless cameras with EVFs.

A 200-600/5.6-8.0 zoom could be very hand-hold-able. Even f/7.1, if they break from their whole-stop silly standards.

I'd settle for 200-500 to limit cost and weight.

If not committed to L, maybe the 18-135 and 70-300 Nanos form a better basis?

Is there room for both?

would that be a "L", EF or just an EF-S zoom? makes a big difference! looking at Tamron and Sigma, and nikon it can be achieved (150-600mm) but it will be just a matter of economics for canon!

I was assuming a lens the quality of the L and DO series. Those 600mm 3rd-party zooms are not as rugged or as sharp wide open (although they're fine when you fill the frame and don't have to crop much).

They are very good in relative (price/performance) and absolute terms. If you want ruggedness there's Sigma S or a little less Tamron G2. If you want hand holdable lens there are all light enough. Sigma S maybe the only exception.

Here's one shot from my terrace few moments ago. Sigma C hand held and wide open.
