EOS M50 vs M5

Hi

So I've been wanting to upgrade from my 400D for a while now, and I want to make the switch to the mirrorless system. Right now I have the Canon EOS 400D with it's original kit lens and 55-250mm f/4-5.6 III. I've read on the internet that the only good thing the M5 has for it is the operating temperature and the control dials? I do bird photography, street and I take my camera with me (or I would like to) on tramps. Also, should I get the 55-200mmf/4.5-5.6 and sell my 55-250? I'm kinda worries about the reach that the 200mm provides even on the 1.6x crop. I should also probably mention that I'm able to get the camera for about 700 USD and I have around 200 USD spare for the lens. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I am using EFS 55-250 IS STM through EF-to-EFM adapter with M5. It works very well. If you do not have to keep the size of the whole package small, you do not have to replace EFS 55-250 for EFM 55-200. Morevoer, you can use your kit lens as well. But remember you need the adapter for EF or EFS lenses.

Good to know! I really like my 55-250. Is the AF performance affected? also which adapter are you using?

Mine is 55-250 STM, while yours does not seem so. Anyway, AF with mine is good enough for my use. I use Canon adapter.

Here is a sample of mine.

I tried Viltrox adapter, but it failed in terms of internal reflection although its AF works very well. I am told that one from Meike works good.

Re: EOS M50 vs M5

When the M50 got released I very nearly sold my M5 to buy one but the main reason I didn't was that I do a lot of bird photography and shoot RAW. The buffer on the M50 is nowhere as big, it fills up very quickly then you have to wait until it clears. The M5 is much better in that respect.

Re: EOS M50 vs M5

Hi Winston,

Although the M5 has a deeper buffer (if you shoot RAW this might be important for shooting BIF) the M50 has an edge for processing power and speed due to the digic 8 processor. Since a few days I own the M50 and it was hard to decide between the M50 and M5 because they are in the same price range overhere in The Netherlands. I decided for the M50 because it uses the LP-E12 battery and I have quite a few of them because I also own the M1 and M10. With LP-E12 batteries one doesn't have to worry that much about compatability with 3 party ones.

The M5 was a tempting option because of all the separate dedicated wheels and knobs but I realized I could do without them because I am already used to the way the M and M10 works using the display. Most of the time I shoot in Av mode and set the aperature with the wheel at the shutter button. The exposure compesation or iso is set via the display.

I also own the both the EF-M 55-200 and EF 55-250 STM for birding the 55-250 is far better than the 55-200. I am using the original Canon EF-EFM converter and it works with every combination of lenses I used so far without any problem. For the modest difference in price I would go for the Canon converter and leave the 3 party ones.
