NX 300 dead/stop working

Hi,

My NX300 stop working without any notice. It was stored for some time now, with the battery inside.

When I turn it on it doesn't do anything, and there is no green light. The red light turns on when I start charging the camera, but then it stops, after a while, when its plugged to an outlet socket. On the other hand, it stays on, when I try charging the camera via an USB port, but the camera won't turn on, nor the green light. There is also no sound. I try different charged batteries, but the result is the same. The green light simply never turns on either I connect the camera to an USB port, or not.

Also the light stays red, if the camera is USB charging and we change to the ON position, but nothing happens

Any guess what happen? Is there something I can do? Is it worthy to send it to repair?

Thanks

Re: NX 300 dead/stop working

The first thing that comes to mind is to clean the battery contacts, both on the battery and in the camera.

I'm not familiar with this particular model, but it might be worth trying to power up the camera from the usb without a battery in the camera. Depending on the design, this may not work anyway, but if it does it would indicate that your battery(s) are faulty.

When you say you have tried other charged batteries, are these your own batteries or batteries from a known working camera?

Thanks for replying Kypfer

I have other Samsung NX cameras, with compatible batteries. I try different batteries, that were charged, and they didn't work either. I try to connect the camera to the USB with no battery, but that didn't work also. What is strange,is that the off, on switch seem to do anything. I mean, the light turns red, immediately after I connect it to a USB port, but when I change to the "on" position, the light continues to stay red. The switch doesn't seem to influence nothing I also try the battery on other cameras and it works... Could it beĀ  a switch malfunction? How can I test it? thanks

Re: NX 300 dead/stop working

Sorry, other than checking that the battery contacts in the camera are clean I can't help further. One would need to be reasonably familiar with the disassembly of this particular model to be able to check the switch functionality etc.

Good luck

Thanks a lot

By the way, can you watch this video:

This camera won't turn off, mine is the opposite, it won't turn on... LOL

Maybe it is a known problem of the switch

Can the battery damage a camera, when it is stored? Should one remove it?

Does anyone knows, of a way, to reset the camera? Is there any battery that powers the configuration, like the date, etc? Is it a good idea to remove that battery? What happens when you don't use a camera for too long? Should one remove the battery of the camera? Can the battery damage the camera? I've read different opinions...

There will be some sort of electrical storage device, capacitor possibly, to remember the time, date etc. but it's not usually customer accessible.

It's always wise to remove the battery from any device that is being stored for any great period. Batteries can and will leak, especially as they reach their use-by date, which could be virtually any time after the warranty runs out

If the battery leaks it will almost certainly damage the camera, as to whether that damage is terminal will depend on the extent of the damage ... anything from a tarnished battery contact to a completely corroded circuit board!

No you scared me I never remove my batteries. I mean I got cameras that are stored, for more than one year, with the battery inside. Could those batteries really leak, like regular AA ones? Do you think it was the fact that the battery was inside the camera thay damage my NX300? Thanks

All batteries can leak. Older batteries are probably more likely to leak than new ones, especially if they are discharged. It's the very nature of the beast and the reason that many handbooks recommend the removal of batteries when equipment is stored.

Modern battery technology is very advanced and a well-treated battery is less likely to leak, but given the cost of cameras and the minimal effort required to remove the battery from most equipment it is a worthwhile precaution!

Do note that whilst equipment manufacturers will probably go to great efforts to ensure that their batteries are as reliable as possible, this may not be true of some after-market manufacturers, which could be one of the reasons why third-party batteries are often so much cheaper than original equipment.

Without personally examining your NX300 I can only guess, but yes, the first thing I would look for is battery-leakage damage. I spent over 40 years as a professional business equipment repair technician and have seen battery leakage in almost everything from a pocket calculator to a high-end server ... almost always because someone somewhere didn't bother to check if the battery was still good!

YMMV

Re: NX 300 dead/stop working

you can try a hardware-reset:

put out the batterie

turn the cam to "on" and leave it for at least 30 seconds or so

turn the cam to "off"

put in the Batterie

turn the cam to "on"

Re: NX 300 dead/stop working

I bought one like that some time ago for 20eur. All it needed was to open the back plate and push in the power ribbon cable in place, it was disconnected due to a fall.

Opening it is easy, just remove all side screws (and maybe a bottom or two, don't remember for sure) and use a plastic tool to push the cover out with some care not to pull it with force. Then check connections. Power ribbon connector is at the battery side.

disassembling the NX300 - Is it difficult?

I'm afraid of disassembling the camera

Can you tell me, if it necessary to do all this, in the guide bellow, to do what you suggest? Do I need to follow all this steps?

Can you indicate me on the pictures, if it is shown, where is that ribbon cable?

Thanks

Follow up to step 3 then check that these with the arrows are seated properly:

If everything is in place then you might have to follow more steps in the guide and remove the motherboard to check battery and on/off button connectors (https://elektrotanya.com/samsung_nx300.pdf/download.html).

Well, I disassembled the machine, but everything seems to be in place. I didn't go beyond step 3. Should I go?

Re: disassembling the NX300 - Is it difficult?

Remove and re-insert the connectors as first step and see if it works. If not you have to remove the motherboard and check the connectors behind it.

Don't force them or the plastic lock can get out and it's difficult to put back. Use some plastic tweezers or the edge of the plastic tool to pull them up side by side, then re-seat firmly by applying even force with a finger.
