Nikon 800mm F5.6 Auto Focus

Hi Folks,

I am considering a used Nikon 800 mm F5.6 to go with a D850.  Does anyone out there know if this lens has been updated by Nikon since its inception?  I believe it's been around for about five years and want to be sure I know what I may be missing if I buy an older lens.

Regards,

As far as I know, no  updates.   I am still using my 1995 Nikon 500mm f4 AF-I, and my 1997 Nikon 300mm f2.8 AF-S.

You should try shooting with my 1990 model Nikon 800mm f5.6 Manual Focus.

Nikon doesn't do lens updates every couple of years

Regards Peter

If you manage to find a used 800 5.6E, make sure it has the matched TC800-1.25E ED

The current Nikon 800mm f5.6E is the state of the art lens same as the 400 f2.8E, 500 f4E and 600 f4E, we are still waiting for the 300 f2.8G to be updated to this spec so there is no likelihood of the 800mm or any of the other super telephoto lenses being updated for a few years yet.

Speaking of Nikon 300mm f2.8, here is a shot take a few years ago with my Nikon 300mm f2.8 AF-S. It was the first of the AF-S models that was released in 1997. I was living in Japan back then, and, I sold my Nikon 300mm f2.8 AF-I, and replaced it with the AF-S model. My 300mm f2.8 is now 21 years old. As I dont shoot a great deal , the lens is in mint condition.

Oh yes, if you " double click " on the photo, it should open right up.  Count the stitches on the leathers

The 800mm f5.6 E is the latest and greatest 800. It will not disappoint, never talked to a 800 E owner with buyer's remorse.

I'm beginning to think Nikon has decided to skip the 300E and just go to the 300S, which will correspond with the release of the Z9 in time for the Olympics.

I doubt it. Nikon is releasing lenses from longest to shortest F L. Time will  tell  .

I own one and quite happy with it; that said, I would like a faster AF, and an integrated TC - as on the 180-400 since the 1,25 TC is dedicated to this lens and cannot be mounted on another lens.
