my checklist for M5 mkII release is basically as the title indicates

as for wish-list... after a month with M5 mkI I'm pretty happy with the body, no intend to updgrade. having said that, the camera has way too much Powershot DNA and in some areas comes short from being serious tool. my wishlist would basically be:

1. M50 tilt screen

2. remove movie recording button (too close to my thumb, and I don't give a s* about video)

3. GPS

4. normal tripod socket. M5 is useless with Arca Swiss ballheads before you buy an L-bracket. completely. probably with a fair number of other QR plates too

5. add menu option to disable intermediate selectable ISO's. I'm fine with just 100, 200, 400, etc. having these extra ISO's is wasting my time

6. allow me to reprogramm direction of rear dial. it's completely counterintuitive for me, in M mode, while I have zero issues with front dial

7. softer touch DOF preview button (to stiff)

8. disable auto-white balancing of the EVF (or whatever it is). M5 adapts colours (even with WB fixed to daylight) and it's confusing to judge scene

9. I'm not sure about LP-E6 batteries. I'd love extra battery life (current is miserable, but I understand it's no DSLR) but am not sure about overall grip and balance of the camera.

10. remove exposure compensation dial, it's useless for me. add top screen LCD

11. improve this shi* eye sensor. it's worthless in M5 mkI, I ended up disabling auto switching after first 2 hours. Fuji X-E1 did much better job with this and it's a much older camera. shame, Canon

12. make the camera remember drive mode. it's super confusing for DSLR user to see M5 mkI wake up from stand by and have drive mode reset to single after it has been manually set to 2 second lag. nightmare in the field.

but in general, in terms of UI and features M5 mkI is pretty fine, there's not much that I'd say the camera is missing other than some UI tweaks (which company like Fuji would tweak with a firmware update and that's it). and with 22mm and 32mm lenses M5 is a beautifully capable combo. even the 15-45 ain't that bad as long as you avoid 15mm. it's the lens choice where I see gaps for me. a 15mm prime would be very welcome and a decent native telephoto lens is glaring omission, EF-M 55-200 just doesn't cut it...

What are your wishes for the maybe upcoming Canon EOS M5 or M6 Mark II? (Just keeping them together, because they are very similar!)

I go first Here is just a list of unsorted thoughts:

  • 4K especially without crop!
  • higher frame rates for all video formats
  • better low light Performance (especially for astrophotography)
  • an ISO invariant sensor or at least a better noise performance
  • higher and lower ISOs (50)
  • better timelapse controls (longer timelapses, shorter intervals, etc.)
  • internal programmable timer for mulitple shots
  • adapter with a cirular polariser
  • adapter with a variable ND-filter
  • Adapter as a Speed Booster with a removable slot for either a circular polariser or ND-filter
  • higher and lower shutter speeds
  • a fix for the shutter synchronization problem (https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4320175)
  • a function to zoom all the way in in order to check sharpness while focusing manually. (Should work with only the press of ONE button!) (Maybe a haven't found the feature!)
  • Dual-Pixel RAW
  • Sound indicators in live view, while recording or in the mode "video".
  • Video RAW or similar
  • True HDMI video output without live view HUD
  • Live audio output
  • Recharging with any USB-charger
  • Batterie grip?
  • USB C-Port
  • USB 3.0 or 3.1 transfer protocol and speeds
  • Higher WiFi speeds (maybe it's my phone)
  • A lot more (maybe all features) remote controls through the Android / iPhone app
  • Clip-In filters system? (Please look at the astronomik web-shop for references) (Just add some notches to firmly hold those filters in place
  • Shutter closing while changing lenses! (It's a Feature for the EOS R, should be a software update away!) (Probably only applicable for automatic lenses)
  • Faster SD-Card Transfer rates (maybe through a double SD-card slot?)
  • More RAM for longer burst rate shooting
  • Silent shutter with rolling shutter mitigation
  • Focus bracketing or even just a series of focus shoots (all RAW) (with a lot of controls!)
  • More time bracketing controls
  • In-build LOG color Profile
  • The ability to choose a lens profile for manual lenses, so they are stored in the metadata? (The data has to be manually put in the first time and can be selected the next time!)
  • In-Body Image Stabilzation

Any other thoughts?

For m6:

1 - instead of flash, pop-up viewfinder;

2 - better battery autonomy;

3 - better focus in low light;

4 - panoramic shooting mode;

Lenses:

1 - 55mm f/1.8

2 - 15-70 f/4 (or more compact 3.5-5.6)

3 - 55-300mm f/3.5-5.6

I'd pay top dollar for an enthusiast level M body. Anything to keep from having to run two separate systems.

I could definitely live without SOME of these features though, but I'd love if it was competitive with the XT-3 spec wise.

Re: Wishlist for Canon EOS M5 / M6 Mark II

For my ideal M6 Mark II:

  • EOS firmware, like the M1, M2 and M50
  • Digic 8 or newer, like the M50 and R
  • Fully articulated screen, like the M50
  • Eye detect AF that also works in AF-servo
  • USB-PD charging, like the R
  • UHS-II SD support, like the R

Nice to have, but not likely going to happen:

  • Electronic compass to store shoot direction
  • 5GHz capable wifi
  • GP-E2 support

Re: Wishlist for Canon EOS M5 / M6 Mark II

There are indeed a number of items on my own wish list (and some niggles I'd like corrected), but if Canon did just the one big thing for me, I'll buy the upgrade in a heartbeat.  And that is to improve the low light autofocus to EOS R levels (esp with small aperture lenses).

The rest I can (and have) lived with.

+1 on the low light AF ... what I would really LOVE is for the M5.2 and M6.2 to take an LP-E6 battery, but I'm sure that's not going to happen.

Re: Wishlist for Canon EOS M5 / M6 Mark II

With ISO 200 and speedlites compensating for three stops i don't have any problem with AF with my M50. Actually its AF low light performance is good enough for me.

  • Silent shutter is one of my biggest wishes.
  • A shutterspeed of minimum 1/8000.
  • No AA-filter
  • Double card-slots
  • Effective weathersealing
  • Two chips of latest development, making it actually a mirrorless 7D mark3, which would be a nice step
  • An EF-M 15-70 mm f/1,8L IS STM
  • An EF-M 40-180 mm f/2,8L IS STM
  • IBIS
  • Flipscreen like M50

I know, these wishes are expensive, but never the less, really wanted.

Those were a couple of my wishes. I have found a lot of positive possibilities with my M6, also in semipro related tasks. It can really make som stunishing shots with the right lenses in front. Why not take this series to the next level, Canon?

Re: Wishlist for Canon EOS M5 / M6 Mark II

My list isn't too complicated:

1) Improve the AF -- since they already did some on the M50, it should be at least that good, but further improvement would be appreciate.  Low-light is, of course, the priority.

2) Higher magnification EVF -- the current M5 EVF (0.62x, I think) reminds me more of my original Lumix DMW-LVF1 (0.52x) than my X-T1 (0.77x.) It doesn't have to be X-T_ level, but at least 0.70x would be nice.  Also, allow for adjustment of displayed color.

3) Silent shutter -- I just bought the M5, but may sell it and buy an M50 for that feature alone.  Why make a small, discrete system without that option?

4) Settable minimum shutter speed for auto-ISO -- still can't believe that isn't already there.

5) Improve the dual-function dial -- it's not very natural to reach and feel less robust (almost wobbly) than the front dial

6) Flip out screen (personal preference)

I would also like IBIS, but I doubt we will see it.

A few somewhat faster lenses would help round out the system without being so large as to be inconsistent with the system:

1) Faster kit zoom similar to what Fujifilm offers; e.g., 17-52mm f/2.4-4

2) Fast 85mm-equiv. portrait lens; e.g., 53mm f/1.4

3) Faster long zoom; e.g., 45-125mm f/4 (or f/3.5-4.5 to make it smaller)

Re: Wishlist for Canon EOS M5 / M6 Mark II

1/ bigger body, deeper grip to get good ergonomy for adults - similar to DSLR (77d/80d size). Enough space for fingers and bigger EF/EF-S lenses.

2/ high optical quality set EF-M zoom (35mm eq. 24-70/4 or 24-70/2.8 and 50-150/4 or 70-200/4) with nice colors, high contrast, low CA, acceptable vignetting and smooth bokeh (something what EF-M lenses are not giving now). Or (better) forgot EF-M mount and put APS sensor into RP body and start to make "R-S" lenses compatible with R mount !

3/ please forgot 32Mpx sensor ! make better 24Mpx with better dynamic range and cleaner shadow colors at low ISO (<800/1600)

4/ EFV usable for people wearing glasses ! More EVF settings - contrast / gamma.

5/ I slightly prefer tilting screen (I'm not making selfies :)) for photography - it's more compact

Re: Wishlist for Canon EOS M5 / M6 Mark II

Aside from some of the things already mentioned (like IBIS):

1. the ability to shoot in camera multiple exposures - my 80D has this.

2. improved time lapse. The time lapse in the M50 already has some improvements over what my 80D has, though video length is shorter, but I'd really like to be able to create a time lapse of long exposure shots (+- 1 sec) to blur traffic trails or moving water.

Re: Wishlist for Canon EOS M5 / M6 Mark II

More like the M50 with:

-better ISO performance

-atleast 1 more dial

-weatherproofing

-battery grip

-larger EVF

-1/8000

-live view screen like the XT3

I would probably trade 4K for one of those.

Re: Wishlist for Canon EOS M5 / M6 Mark II

I think wishes for M5 and M6 may diverge some, I'm speaking as an M6 owner who wants a small travel and general use camera that complements an EF(S) system, but can't help photographing insects with whatever camera is at hand.

4k won't help me, but digital zoom in video would help.

IBIS would help me use the best 32 and 22 lenses and adapted lenses without IS.

Focus bracketing and in-camera stacking might well help.

No increase in size, maybe decrease for M6

Eye detect would help
