Wishlist for Canon EOS M5 / M6 Mark II

What are your wishes for the maybe upcoming Canon EOS M5 or M6 Mark II? (Just keeping them together, because they are very similar!)

I go first Here is just a list of unsorted thoughts:

  • 4K especially without crop!
  • higher frame rates for all video formats
  • better low light Performance (especially for astrophotography)
  • an ISO invariant sensor or at least a better noise performance
  • higher and lower ISOs (50)
  • better timelapse controls (longer timelapses, shorter intervals, etc.)
  • internal programmable timer for mulitple shots
  • adapter with a cirular polariser
  • adapter with a variable ND-filter
  • Adapter as a Speed Booster with a removable slot for either a circular polariser or ND-filter
  • higher and lower shutter speeds
  • a fix for the shutter synchronization problem (https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4320175)
  • a function to zoom all the way in in order to check sharpness while focusing manually. (Should work with only the press of ONE button!) (Maybe a haven't found the feature!)
  • Dual-Pixel RAW
  • Sound indicators in live view, while recording or in the mode "video".
  • Video RAW or similar
  • True HDMI video output without live view HUD
  • Live audio output
  • Recharging with any USB-charger
  • Batterie grip?
  • USB C-Port
  • USB 3.0 or 3.1 transfer protocol and speeds
  • Higher WiFi speeds (maybe it's my phone)
  • A lot more (maybe all features) remote controls through the Android / iPhone app
  • Clip-In filters system? (Please look at the astronomik web-shop for references) (Just add some notches to firmly hold those filters in place
  • Shutter closing while changing lenses! (It's a Feature for the EOS R, should be a software update away!) (Probably only applicable for automatic lenses)
  • Faster SD-Card Transfer rates (maybe through a double SD-card slot?)
  • More RAM for longer burst rate shooting
  • Silent shutter with rolling shutter mitigation
  • Focus bracketing or even just a series of focus shoots (all RAW) (with a lot of controls!)
  • More time bracketing controls
  • In-build LOG color Profile
  • The ability to choose a lens profile for manual lenses, so they are stored in the metadata? (The data has to be manually put in the first time and can be selected the next time!)
  • In-Body Image Stabilzation

Any other thoughts?

So you don't want much then.

OK, here's mine:

No 4K. whatever 4K Canon release will cause great suffering. It will lack some feature which is absolutely essential because the Sony A7III or Panasonic GH5 has it. If they have no 4K at all this just simplifies the bleating.

Really, really good 1080.

A new sensor that delivers better image quality, competes with current APS-C (1.5) rather than M43. The sensor is 11% smaller than the APS-C used by other brands but if Canon can get closer to that group than the 2X crop factor group then that's a pass mark.

At least all the improvements from the M50.

Internal memory. One card but a nice little chunk of SSD memory.

Weather sealing.

2 new lenses. A fast kit zoom (f2.8 15-45) and a longer telephoto.

USB charging.

Slightly larger M5

ability to take EPL-6? battery, as well as the present battery inside a dummy case.

More dedicated dials, less menu diving and trying to remember what function is mapped where.

  1. 1/8000 shutter speed
  2. Fully articulated LCD
  3. 3.69M dot EVF
  4. EF-M 50mm f/1.4 or faster prime lens
  5. Wishful thinking: IBIS and weather sealing

cross type af

Much better af in low light

much better spot af like 7d2

easier way to switch from medium size af box to small one to a new spot one

af works with canon pre-flash

The rest of the camera is fine for me.  Could have less noise at higher iso, but my priority is better af as I can fix the noise in post, but if an image is not spot on af wise then I have to delete it....no can fix.

i wish they will come out with a real competitor to the XT3/a6500.

A 7d3 equivalent in an M body, could be larger than the current M5 with a larger grip.

Dual digic processors.

A large magnification viewfinder is a must. (the one in the R will do.)

Video specs (i dont care much about)

Improved battery life.

Look at M50 and EOS R
4

The M5/M6 will be something in between the M50 and EOS R.  Take the best specs from the M50 and EOS R and you will have a very good approximation of the M5/M6 replacements.  Basically, a higher res LCD, a higher res EVF, and finally a UHS II card slot.  Burst rates might get a slight bump and the USB port may change.  That is about it.  Expecting significantly more is just dreaming.

I want something like this...

Fujifilm X-T3 + XF56mmf1.2 R = $2,398

So, I don't have to shoot with something like this...

M5 + EOS M Adapter + EF 50mm f/1.2L = $2,378

15-45 F2.8

50-125 F2.8

i think it's too much to ask for Canon so a variable f2.8 - f4 will do.

I would have been happy if the M5ii had 4k with no crop option and a FF Sensor. I like smaller cameras, but i will just have to settle for the R when the price comes down.

  • Tilt screen !! Keep it! (I hate fully articulated screens.)
  • Tighten the “ISO” dial on the M6. It’s too easy to move now by accident.
  • Touch and Drag on the M6 would be nice too (when using the optional EVF).

Re: Wishlist for Canon EOS M5 / M6 Mark II

My priorities:

Top

1) IBIS (I'm dreaming... I know!)

2) Auto ISO similar to 80D

3) Fully articulated LCD (like M50)

4) Eye Af like M50, but with tracking for continous focus modes

5) single button EVF magnification while manual focusing

6) Electronic Shutter

Medium

7) weather sealed

8) usb charging (without adaptor; EOS R implementation is crazy!)

9) 1/8000 shutter time

10) grip and/or battery grip

11) Focus bracketing

Low

Shutter closing while changing lenses

Dual card

I hat the same problem with the ISO dial. I disabled it somehow over the menu. Now have to change it through the display, but that's OK for me. I alwayws had the problem, that it might switch to ISO 25600.

More thoughts:

  • I would like to have a fully articulated Screen, but a tilt Screen is also fine, as Long as I can tilt it up, down and to one side!
  • Min and max shutter speed range, when you're in the Av-Mode. (I use Aperture Priority mode quite often, in order to set the aperture to my liking and defining the ISO Range. The Problem, sometime I just need an Image within a certain ISO, shutter speed and aperture range).
  • The same as aperture range.
  • There should be something like an Option in Av to choose which Parameter (ISO or shutter Speed) has priority over the other. For example defining "Av, T, ISO" or "Av, ISO, T" for Aperture priority and "Tv, A, ISO" or "Tv, ISO, A" for shutter Speed priority.
  • an "always-on" Switch for Depth of Field. For the Moment it's mappable as a Depth of Field peaking to a button.

Yup, those and better battery life would do me. I would settle for just fixing the excess finder contrast, tightened ISO dial and better battery life.

Interesting how few wishlists had 'better video' on them. I feel only spec-hounds actually care much about 4K video.

For me I'd like to see the M5/6 gain the feature of the M50 but in a body with a few more photographer-accessible controls. Weather sealing would be great if the lenses were but they aren't so .. no.

I'd love to see two new primes, much more important than the body IMO.

Going out to insane land, I'd love to see an M+ mount which supported the on-lens assignable dial the R mount just introduced. For a compact camera like the Ms are, that would be a great feature. I'd probably buy v2 of every M lens I have if they put that on it. Yes I know that's not happening but I thought it was one of the most innovative features of R.

A better focusing system for manual focus. Manual Focus is good, but sometimes far from perfect.

Here are maybe some ideas:

Let the user select a spot and display at the side something like a bar, which is indicating, how much tthis spot is in focus. The bar could be vertical. The top and bottom end you indicate out of focus or out of phase. The middle would always symbolize to be in focus. an indicator would than move up and down to signal the focus registered at that perticular point.

This feature could work very good for astrophotography. If you're shooting portraits with a very shallow depth of field, this could help to.

I also need something like sharpness peaking. Maybe a button, which switched to 10x zoom as long as it is pressed or repressed.

It would also be great to just see a small window at the right or left side, which zoom in at a perticular spot.

Agree with most of your list .. but there's one more super-important one

Make it use EOS firmware instead of Powershot !!

Such that it would then operate correctly with:

  • Speedlites - which currently make camera 'pause' when its dark
  • Image stabilised EF lenses - currently does not turn off motors when exposure calculations are done
  • (chance of) Magic Lantern implementation

Oh and also add ... get one team to implement Menu UI, as there are lots of items that use different font sizes and placement of YES/NO (some right justified, some in-line) .. looks sloppy.
