T1i/500d faulty card slot door

The card slot door of my T1i is loose and won't make contact to make the camera operable. The plastic housing for one of the screws on the inside of the door broke about a year ago, and the screw has been missing. I attempted to replace the screw, but it only exacerbated the problem. Whereas I had been able to keep the door closed and use the camera, now I'm unable to keep it closed without holding it closed with my hand. It's not possible for me to shoot that way. What are my options?

The camera is used and not under warranty.

Have you tried some duct tape?

Heh! That's one of the things I've thought about — or some kind of tape (as for duct tape, I'm somewhat concerned about leaving residue on the camera) — but before I commit, I'd like to know and weigh the pros and cons of all of my options.

I prefer to be able to remove the SD card and put it into a card reader to extract my images after shooting. Is DIY repair possible without disassembling the back of the camera? How much would a camera repair shop charge me? If I were to use tape, would clients have the perception of my being less than professional? What kind of tape would be my best bet, if I have to go that route?

Those are the kind of things, among whatever else that has occurred to me that others might suggest, that I'm hoping others can help me work through. I asked the questioned open-endedly in an attempt to get unbiased answers.
