DIF & RDS test (many images)
7

I am not a successful birder but I have made a mount for a red dot sight with minimal parallax - this meant fitting it as close to the camera body (RF style) as possible and still leaving all clearances.  I tested it by tracking and photographing a DIF (Drone in Flight).

Just a little mount wiggle allows the dot to be lined up with the lens.

Camera was mounted on tripod - drone was tracked with camera hand held and using the red dot sight only.  Relied on the camera's auto focus ability.

Camera: Panasonic GX7

Lens: Panasonic 200/2.8

Test - red dot on blossom centre screen

Cropped - background detail

Cropped - distance = approx 200 metres

Not cropped - messy surrounding detail

Landing - not cropped

Another landing - not cropped

Neat mount.

If you want to send me a few sketches and dimensions, I'm happy to draft it up and turn it into a .stl file and chuck it on my thingiverse page. Then anyone who wants would be able to print one out with a 3D printer.

Thanks Martin, I will do that as soon as I can.

Been a bit of a "lead balloon" Martin.  I guess if the little connector were sold at $20 per pop everyone would be excited and buying them.  But the effort of self-made is just too big a hurdle.

I wouldn't expect too many people to want them. The main thing is to post the information/files out there for the few people who do want such a gadget. They may not see your post before it drops off the front few pages, but they'll be able to find it when needed with a search engine.

Seeing we are chatting about it I have done a rough sketch with some measurements - I will flash this up and add some photographs soon.
