Moral of the story: use a lighter tripod!

Hand-held, turn IS/IBIS OFF and use very g=high speeds.

Unexpected but it worked for me!

Very happy with the lens now!

Still, that's not a normal behavior. I never shut the Ibis off and never had such a problem.

I think your camera is faulty.

The 1st looks OK-ish: the bird is slightly out of focus, but the tree is sharp. No shake.

The 2nd one is blurred again, shake + the bird is out of focus.

The 2nd the bird was very far and it is tiny, the focus is more a MFT focus fault than anything else, I do not see the “halo” effect though.

The problem is the same on another camera so don’t think that is the cause.

Don't despair!

I had exactly the same problems when I first got that lens; it took me a while to learn how to use it.

In your second photo you have simply missed focus.

As others have said - open - up the aperture wind up the ISO and hold it still.

The thing that helped me most was to use AF + MF with 3X magnification, tweak focus with the MF ring and see the difference.

Low light isn't a problem if you hold still.

I took this while leaning against a wall.

Enjoy,

Dicky.

I then went to Best Buy and got one of the cheapest and very light tripod ($34.99), I'll be damned! see below

Like you said, I'll be damned.

I have no explanation, but from this and your other posts it seems like you're getting things worked out. Good to hear things are looking better.

Turn off all IS, set the shutter speed to 1/1600 or faster, switch to electronic shutter an take a photo of something close by (to eliminate atmospheric distortion). Can be hand-held - at that shutter speed it shouldn't matter.

Do you still get the halo?

Bravo! Worked great for handhelp, I think IS was the culprit here.

Yep... another example of IBIS and high shutter speeds in the range of 1/800 (or sometimes 1/500) to 1/1600 not working well together.

As I suggested, try 1/125 -1/250 with IBIS and you should be happy as well ( with a steady hand and still subject of course). But for BIF, use 1/2500 (sometimes 1/1600-2000 also works) and no IBIS. For still subjects use around 1/250 with IBIS On and even try 1/125 and this also gets your ISO down this way and aperture to f8-f9 where the lens performs best.

Olympus went DUAL IS for a reason with the 300 Pro and it wasn't just to get another stop of stabilisation.... that was for the 12-100. Super teles and IBIS have some issues.
