Gx8 video vs gx80?

I am after a small Panasonic camera to shoot some video and to use a small walk about camera. I have a g7 at the moment and am looking to get a camera with in body stabilisation. The gx80 seems perfect except the lack of mic input. The gx8 is also good but how good is the stabilisation? I’ve heated it can’t be used in 4K video either? Not sure what to go for.

The G80 (also known as the G85) may be the camera to look for. It's a G7-style body and comes with both mic input (unlike the GX80) and stabilisation with 4K video (unlike the GX8).

Though it might be worth waiting a week or so to see if Panasonic announce an updated version of the G80/G85 with a 20MB sensor. I think this is quite likely as it's about due (the GX85 was updated to the GX9 a few months ago, even if Panasonic named it as an update to the GX8), and it would also be a good opportunity for Panasonic to show continued commitment to the MFT system with all the buzz about their new full-frame system going around at the moment.

Nonetheless, the current G80/G85 is an excellent camera.

Had and used both. Both are flawed in many ways.

Overall GX85 will be better than the GX8 for video because the GX8 doesn't have IBIS when recording any type of video format (which wont matter if you use lenses with OIS) and cannot output to a external monitor while recording. The GX85 doesn't have a flippy screen or mic jack, but you can at least record/output to an external monitor using HDMI out and use headphones as well as grabbing audio externally.

They don't overheat. If you get the non-import model they have no recording time limit.

I think it depends on what you will be doing with the video and how important the quality of the footage is. Each camera has a small list of pros and cons.

GX80. Pros: 5-axis IBIS, dual IS, 4K with IBIS, tilting screen. Cons: No mic input, 1080p footage is low quality and very soft (not sharp)

GX8. Pros: 4K, Sharp 1080p footage, mic input. Cons: No IBIS in 4K (not sure about 1080p, but its IBIS is not 5-axis anyway)

G85 Pros: 5-axis IBIS, dual IS II, 4K with IBIS, sharp 1080p footage, mic input. Cons: larger body.

GX9. Pros: 5-axis IBIS, dual IS, 4K with IBIS, sharp 1080p footage. Cons: 4K has large crop factor, no mic input.

G9. All the pros listed above, plus 4K 60fps and slow motion video. No cons except large body.

GH5. All the pros listed above, plus 4K 60fps and slow motion video, and heaps of other video features I have no idea how to use. No cons except large body.

Fully agreed. The G80/G85's not as compact as the GX80/GX85, but it's incredibly capable for the price, particularly for video due to the mic jack and flip screen. And the 12-60 it typically comes with is lovely; sharp and weathersealed and a useful zoom range. I think the G80/G85 is one of the best all-around cameras for under US$1000 that's ever been made, in any lens system or for any sensor format.

I have both the G85 and the GX85. I love'em both. G85 for video and bad weather, GX85 for social situations and discreet street shooting.
