Sony also has a short product upgrade cycle. So it's not out of the question that Sony will have released an additional body or two in 12 months time.

If Sony has pealed (sic) off more Canon users than any other brand how would you explain the fact that Sony's market share hasn't changed but Canon's has increased?

An of course Canon many release a couple new products too. But it's hard to imagine any scenario where the R is selling at a premium to the A73.

Just my $0.02.

1) Nikon

2) Different market segments. Sony have stolen a good number of purchases from Canon at the high end, whereas Canon have eaten Sony's pie at the bottom. And this was wholly intentional on Sony's part - it's a lot more profitable to convert one 5D-level user (who presumably buys new gear yearly) and lose 3 A6000 buyers, than to do the opposite. The operating profits on each company back this up, too.

I think the EOS R has a tough market. It's pretty much what a 6DII should have been but I think that moment has passed for many potential 6DII buyers. Many will have left Canon, some would have got the 5DIV and some would have reluctantly purchased the 6D.

In my opinion though it's what the 6DII should have been in 2017 and against the A7III and Z6 it's not a very compelling option. I guess they are relying on EF lens owners?

That's really where I'm at. Who knows how many others are in the same boat though.

I've had the 6d for a few years. I'm not super heavily invested in lenses, but I got really good deals on my L's and it'd likely cost me a lot more time and money to totally switch systems and get new lenses.

Sony + adapter is a better option, but you have to spend a good chunk of money on the adapter and it'll never function as well as native glass.

There are some aspects of the 6dII I like, but not enough to bother with upgrading. The 5dIV is so much more expensive, it's hard to justify. To me, the R really hits a sweet spot - but again, it's hard to say how many others are in the same situation.

Same here! Was eagerly waiting for the 6D2 and really tried to talk it up for myself. Now it's even significantly down in price but I just cannot ignore the disappointment and don't want to invest in yesterday tech after waiting for years.

5D4 is not justifiable in price and is too big and heavy as well.

Quite happy with my 6D for what it is but I never had a really good AF. The R has exactly that and is smaller and lighter, too.

Price of the R seems ok and will sure come down a bit soon.

I have 2 L lenses and 3 Sigma Art. No way I am changing brand. I like Canon's menus, DPP and ergonomics. I don't care if the R is not 100% on par with the Sony A73. It's plenty good enough and a huge step up from my old 6D and 5D2.

I might get one next year with the 24-105 if the reviews are good.

How do you think the EOS R price will change over the next month? Some Canon cameras barely change over long periods of time and others like the 6DII drop considerably and quickly.

For example the 6DII was released at £2000 and has been as low as £1300 (body only, non-grey import).

In the US, the 6D2 dropped from $2,000 to $1,600, i.e., 20%.

The 5D4 dropped from $3,500 to $3,100 (over a longer period).

The M50 kit, which sells quite well, dropped from $900 to $700 (more than 20%).

80D: from $1,200 to $1,000 (for two years).

You get the idea.

+1 You've summed it up perfectly.

I'm in almost exactly that same spot. 6d, several L lenses, not interested in Sony w/Metabones, 6D2 is not enough of an upgrade.

I will probably buy in the next few months either the R or 5d4. If the R has IQ, DR, etc. that at least matches the 5d, I'll probably get the R (because I'd like the even-newer tech, the tilt screen, and even the built-in Canon Log). If the R can't match the 5D4, I'll get the 5d.

At the moment the R at B&H with control wheel adapter is $2498. The 5d refurb with sales tax for my location is $2949. That's only $500 difference, and by Black Friday the 5d may drop even more. I know it's 2016 tech, but compared to my 2012 6d, the 5div really IS newer tech.
