Get EF 35mm f/2 IS now or wait for RF 35mm f/1.8 IS

Hi everyone. I will be upgrading to the RF body within the next 6 months from my 80D. Does it make sense to get the EF 35mm f/2 IS now already or wait until I can afford the EOS R and then get the RF 35?

Both lenses are priced pretty much even. From the MTF charts it seems that the new RF 35 should be a bit better... Thoughts?

I have the 35mm f/2 and use it very often on my 80D. It’s a marvellous lens. But if you intend to upgrade to R and don’t need this FL now, I‘d probably wait.

I use it on 5DIII & M5 and think the same.

EF 35/2 IS has excellent sharpness but it's bokeh sucks donkeyballs and it has no close up capabilities of the RF 35/1.8,  so I would definitely wait a while and see the reviews for RF lens. if you don't mind bokeh and don't need large magnification then 35/2 is very decent lens and you won't be disappointed. plus: EF lens is compatible with more than just one body (ie. on a 80D or Rebel you have excellen stabilized standard prime. this is an excellent combo)

If you want to keep your 80D, the EF lens might be better, it is useful on APS-C. If you go R only, only using R lenses will give you an uncluttered way of shooting

Really? I think the bokeh is lovely.

Don't have samples by hand but I like it. What are donkeyballs?

Look at the sample from Bryan:

If you are not keeping 80D or another Canon dslr/M, you should sell it.

The only downside of new RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM is STM motor. It's not the newer Nano USM type. So it's slightly slower than USM during AF.

However, it gains 1:2 macro, closer focusing distance and 9 aperature blades vs 8 aperature blades on EF 35mm f/2 IS USM, PLUS the new programmable command ring. And gosh for the first time, IT DOES include lenshood and lens pouch!!

I am currently keeping some of my EF lens until there are more RF lens and wait until the price to settle down a bit. New lenses are always more expensive at the start.
