You must not be familiar with firmware updates with the M cameras. They are as rare as hens' teeth.

This is not the M line. This is Canon's new signature line, the one they are betting their future on. They've already announced a software update coming.

It is the only past indicator of future performance in Canon's MILC arena.

It's not an indicator at all; it's being used by you to mislead.

I would add a number six as being very limited AF performance. As for firmware updates, Canon's record on this is pretty sketchy. Don't hold your breath waiting on them.

Are you referring to actual AF or FPS during AF.

It is mostly centered around tracking. The frames rates are so low that tracking would be easier but eye AF isn't available at all in tracking mode. It is a one show wonder, literally.

I was never interested in this camera to begin with it would have had to be on the level of the 1DXMKII speed at a 5D price and sensor to get me to buy it and that was never going to happen. But the FPS in tracking is disappointing.

I can forgive the AF issues more than the fps issues. The AF issues are harder to deal with as a lot of R&D is needed to get it right. However, fps is a straightforward matter and there is no excuse for such abysmal performance in this area. Maybe the AF is so poor that it keeps the fps so low?

My guess is read speed from the sensor since it is using dual pixel

It seems all issues likely find their root in poor processor performance and/or an inherent problem with Canon's implementation of DPAF.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you buy the camera based on features that actually exist when you press the ‘buy’ button.

Fair point. Assuming that could be done via firmware, how would you vote?

I'm afraid that no amount of FW-fiddling will turn the R - which is in essence a static-targets-only cam - into a fast action shooting champion MILC . And as such, a half baked an erzatz it will still leave "I'm being shortchanged" bitter aftertaste.

OTOH in many potential buyers their acute bout of GAS is so strong apparently, that they'll for sure invent a perfect rationale to buy the R anyway

silly questions, certainly Canon won’t (can’t) change 4k crop via firmware. At most, we will hopefully get ai servo eye AF focusing capability.

I just can't believe that the best Canon can do in 2018 is the best they could do in 2016 which for the time wasn't as good as the competition. Sure, it may be a hardware limitation but that seems like something they would of had at least two years to address?

FPS is certainly a hardware limitation i.e. bandwidth limitation. They could have addressed but that would have required more expensive hardware and then a  higher price tag. With a high-end model having a significantly higher price tag, they can afford to build in better hardware.

I know Canon don't release big firmware updates that add features but if they did, would it change your opinion of the EOS R?

So far the biggest complaints of the EOS R so far are:

1) 4K Crippling

2) No IBIS

3) Single SD card slot

4) Older sensor

5) FPS

Whilst number 2 and 3 and 4 can't be remedied with firmware, would a firmware release that fixed the other two encourage you to buy the EOS R?

What about waiting for the upcoming release of the better spec'd body rather than trying to firm fix the base model?

Part of the problem is also that the critics evaluate this model as if it were going to be the only one Canon ever released and thus had to be all things to all people.

We do not judge the 1DX series the same way as do the 5D series or the same way we do the 6D series.  We don't say the 1DX is too big compared to the 5D, or that the 5D is too slow because it can't do the blazing speed of the 1DX.  Why?  Because we evaluate based on the market niche the camera is made for.

We don't as yet have the luxury of seeing the other models in the R series, but we still need to keep in mind that this is only 1 of at least a few bodies planned, each to fulfill a different niche.

Yup... I'm waiting.

Those can't be fixed with a firmware update.  They are physical things that need to be in the camera.
