Would a firmware update encourage you to buy the EOS R?

I know Canon don't release big firmware updates that add features but if they did, would it change your opinion of the EOS R?

So far the biggest complaints of the EOS R so far are:

1) 4K Crippling

2) No IBIS

3) Single SD card slot

4) Older sensor

5) FPS

Whilst number 2 and 3 and 4 can't be remedied with firmware, would a firmware release that fixed the other two encourage you to buy the EOS R?

Yes, fixing the video implementation and fps would make the camera much more appealing.

No, software improvements won't be enough. I need the other features.

I was going to get the EOS R anyway.

I would add a number six as being very limited AF performance.  As for firmware updates, Canon's record on this is pretty sketchy.  Don't hold your breath waiting on them.

Fair point. Assuming that could be done via firmware, how would you vote?

Yes they do, 5DII and 7D.

Those were not on the same level as the ones I have proposed. If it helps, read it as "Canon don't often release big firmware updates".

silly questions, certainly Canon won’t (can’t) change 4k crop via firmware. At most, we will hopefully get ai servo eye AF focusing capability.

Are you referring to actual AF or FPS during AF.

Honestly the fps in continuous mode and no eye af in continuous mode are the two biggest downers for me. If they could change those two, I would be much more interested. 4K isn’t a huge deal to me

I don't see the R in my future.  With it I see Canon is either 1) continuing to gimp their cameras to promote market segmentation more than I like or 2) they are so far behind technologically that no amount of firmware upgrades will fix its issues.

I think it is obvious that Canon has major issues with their image processors being very weak.  They have gotten around this by doubling up processors on their higher end cameras.  The fact the R has only one processor shows it is a lower tier R camera and very likely the equivalent of the 6D2 in the lineup.  Expect another R camera soon with two processors and hopefully a much better set of innards having IBIS and much more robust AF and frame rates.

I think Canon is going to try and sell an R model with the capabilities of the A7/3 for the price of the 5D4.  I doubt this will work.

A rumor:

"Functionality being added to the Canon EOS R soon after release with firmware update"

Interesting! Looks like they will fix eye af which is a plus for sure. No fix for the slow fps in continuous, but I’m sure that’s because it’s as fast as it can be with this processor.

It is mostly centered around tracking.  The frames rates are so low that tracking would be easier but eye AF isn't available at all in tracking mode.  It is a one show wonder, literally.

Mirrorless Cams Get More Software Updates

We all need to become accustomed to the idea that mirrorless cameras are mostly in essence computers.  Dslr's are also computers merged with optical/mechanical systems, but mirrorless is even more of a computer.  And like all computers, they can and will be updated with software releases.

Expect this to be the new norm; more software updates for MILC, with more significant features added.

I just can't believe that the best Canon can do in 2018 is the best they could do in 2016 which for the time wasn't as good as the competition. Sure, it may be a hardware limitation but that seems like something they would of had at least two years to address?

I was never interested in this camera to begin with it would have had to be on the level of the 1DXMKII speed at a 5D price and sensor to get me to buy it and that was never going to happen. But the FPS in tracking is disappointing.

I can forgive the AF issues more than the fps issues. The AF issues are harder to deal with as a lot of R&D is needed to get it right. However, fps is a straightforward matter and there is no excuse for such abysmal performance in this area.  Maybe the AF is so poor that it keeps the fps so low?

You must not be familiar with firmware updates with the M cameras.  They are as rare as hens' teeth.

This is not the M line.  This is Canon's new signature line, the one they are betting their future on.  They've already announced a software update coming.

It is the only past indicator of future performance in Canon's MILC arena.
