Get R now, wait, pass, or switch?

Myself, I really like the R (am terribly disappointed that Canon did not incorporate IBIS, though), but feel it's priced too high compared to the competition.  So, most likely, I'm going to wait for a refurb deal in the future like I did with the 6D2, and, barring that, maybe switch systems when I upgrade next (but I'm thinking I won't).

This raises the question, then, that if I have the 6D2, which is relatively new, and is a camera I like a lot, why upgrade again so soon?  Well, that's 'cause the R has a lot of things I really like and could put to good use -- if it weren't for the lack of IBIS, I'd get it now.  But, yes, of course, staying with the 6D2 for a while is the prudent course (I kept the 5D for 7 years and the 6D for 5 years, so that might be how it goes this round).

Anyway, I'm curious what others are thinking, so...

Sadly it's time to go for me.

I had the original 6D and it was and still is excellent but my work has meant I need a more hybrid stills/video camera. I have been waiting for a suitable Canon and sadly it's never come. I have to ask how long must I wait? I waited for the 5DIV and was let down. I waited for the 6DII and was massively let down. I said I'll wait for their FF mirrorless and I was let down once more. Years of let downs is something I don't fancy waiting for anymore.

What has surprised me about all this waiting is how different the attitudes of each company are. Just compare the Fuji X-T3 and Sony A7III release compared to the Canon EOS R release. Those companies fill me with more confidence for the future. Sadly long gone are the days of the 5DII and 550D Canon.

I'm going to wait for the next model.  I wish it has IBIS and two SD cards and a bit faster fps.

I assume 2 SD and faster fps will be on the next level up but I have a feeling Canon will not have IBIS anytime soon unless they see that they are losing market share.

For now, Sony remains my "universal" FF system.

Canon dropped the ball with no ibis and 4k crop. I wont buy into new system without at least 4k topic resolved. However I have other mirrorless system I quite happy with. If I had none, and tesf and reports would confirm R af is very good, I'd buy one but at a lower price.

What has surprised me about all this waiting is how

Canon doesn't produce great bodies, but great lenses.

different the attitudes of each company are. Just compare the Fuji X-T3 and Sony A7III release compared to the Canon EOS R release.

Sony lenses are overpriced, pagued with decentering issues and not that great overall.

X-t3 is just hype. No ibis. Crop sensor at very high price. Af that is supposed to be great but will still lag behind dslr. Fuji always gets rave reviews.

eThose companies fill me with more confidence for the future. Sadly long gone are the days of the 5DII and 550D Canon.

I think the EOS R is a solid entry point. If the AF is hot and the adapter works fine and the ergonomics have been done well then that is all most Canon buyers will require. In reality that is the hard bit as evidenced by the evolution Sony and Fuji have gone through. Constantly working to improve the AF system to get closer to DSLR standards.

Canon's first ML seems to be at that point at the start. I think many here are underappreciating how difficult that is and what an engineering achievement they have done.

Greg.

If you shoot with 6dii, it probably means you don’t care about video much. In which case, I’d skip EOS R for now.

I noticed that I have all of your bodies NIkon D600 and Samsung NX1, NX500, and many of your lenses.

None of the three cameras you have have IBIS.  They appeared to be good enough for you to own.  Samsung NX1 has a great AF but I wouldn't say that it was better than a Canon 1D or a Nikon D500.  My Sony lenses are quite nice.  The only sucky one was the original NEX5 kit lens.  That one sucked.  My 55-210 Sony E kit lens, however, is amazing regardless of price.  I must have gotten lucky.

This is a tough one. I'll probably end up doing nothing for now and just using what I have.

I would have seriously considered getting it if it had IBIS and 10fps. It's also CDN $ 400 more expensive than the full spec A7iii. I really don't want to switch systems right now although I have an excellent Sony e-mount APS-C system aside from my Canon 5DS/5DMKII and lenses.

I thought about adding an A7iii but have a hard time picking the standard zoom lens. The Sony 24-70/2.8 is too expensive and huge. And the Zeiss 24-70/4 have mediocre reviews.

Have you considered the Tamron 28-75 f2.8?  You'll have to give up the 24-28 FOV though.  I'm going to wait for Sigma to release a true "native" FE lens in this focal range and then decide.  I don't need F2.8 zoom at this range.  I prefer primes between 24mm-55mm for anything faster.

I’m a 6d user who has been waiting to upgrade. I will likely go for an a7iii for a few reasons. First, I was hoping for higher fps from the eos r, second I was hoping for ibis, and third is price with lenses. I’ll likely get the a7iii with the Tamron 28-75 and Sony 85 f1.8. Light and inexpensive.

IMO, it only makes sense to get the R if you get some of the new lenses. I will get an R camera at some point but there must be an R lens I really want and which is not terribly expensive. I see no reason to get the R to use it with my current lenses (7 L's and one fisheye).

Agreed. The R is not very compelling. IBIS would have changed that, though. For me, the prospect of IS with my non-IS Canon primes would have been compelling. The EVF is also a plus in my book.

Thanks I'm considering the new Tamron too but right now leaning on the Zeiss 24-70/4. I have already the Sonnar 55/1.8 full frame emount lens that I've been using with the A6000. Everything is still up in the air for me. Apparently there might be a Sony announcement on Sept. 18th. If there is an A6700 or A7000 I might consider that as well.

Correctomundo.

Truth be told, a DSLR version of the R is close to what I was expecting the 6D2 was going to be.  Had I not bought the 6D2, I'd definitely have gotten the R or have switched systems to the Z.  But, for sure, I'm gonna wait things out a bit and see how things play.

Why not?  I've seen the pictures you take with it.

I like the 6D.   The 6D2 would give me an articulating screen and better AF.

The R will come down to the same price soon enough.  I'll get one then.

Technology is very interesting.   I don't crave it for its own sake, though.

Funny you mention it!  I haven't been posting pics much since I got the even the 6D, much less the 6D2.  But, your compliment is appreciated!

Exactly so.  It's funny, 'cause the 6D "should have been" what the 6D2 is and the 6D2 "should have been" the R.  In my opinion, at least.

The R will come down to the same price soon enough. I'll get one then.

That's the plan.

Technology is very interesting. I don't crave it for its own sake, though.

Indeed.  Why do I want the R?  Smaller and lighter than the 6D2 (before the 6D2 came out, I said that a camera that split the size of the SL1 and 6D would be perfect, and, well, that's the R), better AF (although I'm very happy with the 6D2 AF) to include eye AF, more base ISO DR (assuming it's pretty much the same sensor as the 5D4), and IBIS.  Whoops!  Strike the last one.

Anyway, is it worth $2K for that, assuming that's the price of a refurb after tax?  Dunno.  Might be smarter to wait for the next-gen.  Truth be told, I'd swap my entire kit for an R + 28-70 / 2, which would be a great move since that costs more than my whole kit.
