Food for thought...

DPreview's EOS M mirrorless forum:
In all the years I've been here, (though this forum is generally well behaved - compared to others), there's an extraordinary amount of whining that goes on lately.  Almost all of it devoted to dissatisfaction - for one reason or another - towards the EOSM platform and Canon's drip-feed of lenses.  Endless complaints that often end up with the words: "I'm moving to Sony".... even if it doesn't happen.  I've been critical of occasional decisions by Canon too.  But my routine is predictable:  I mention why I dislike a marketing decision or product ...and then I either buy it or I don't.  If I was unhappy with the M as a photographic tool I think I would have moved on years ago.  Clearly that's not the case.
.
If you asked me today to show you my favorite picture taken with an EOS M camera, I simply couldn't do it.  Because there are so many "favorite pictures" I've taken with the EOS M camera.  It's been a wonderful experience.  It's also been a marvelous performer... all the way back to the original EOSM which people felt had too slow an AF system to be effectively useful for them.  I've taken many memorable and important pictures with the original EOS M.  I went through my images just now and found there were literally hundreds of excellent keepers from that camera that helped me to record so many important moments over the years.  I'm just grateful that I had a decent camera and lens to do this.  And I think you should be too if you've been an EOS M owner.  If you're having problems taking pictures with an EOS M camera it's probably not the camera that's the problem.  EOS M cameras are reliable and I've never really been disappointed with their results.  If for some reason I were to move to another platform, I'll still be happy with the shots I've taken with the M cameras.
.
.

So, you moved to Sony?  ....

.
.
AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT:
FEEL FREE to DISCUSS anything at all on the following:
.
* SHOW US some pictures that you took with an EOSM that you like.
.
* SHOW US some pictures taken with a Sony Camera that inspire you to consider moving platforms.  (Not for people to disagree with but to demonstrate and explain why you like the images).  Surely it catches all the shots the EOS M misses because it has such amazing AF speed.
.
* SHOW US some pictures from the new CANON EOS R system lenses that make you think it's an EOS-M-Killer.
.
* Were you a former M-forum member? If you moved to Sony, were you happier?

I like the M sytam ..i joined because if all the lenses and the biggest selection of APS-c lenses than no one else has that are SHARP....COMPACT.....CHEAP ..nobody has this.. thier lenses mosty have only 2 of these  traits at best ...sony only has one  APS-c lens that fits all 3 ..sort of its not that compact the 50mm 1.8 oss ...the 11-22 is one of a kind and the reason i get my M  and when it, and the £2500GBP  11-24F4L are both on APS-c the cheap M lens is a little sharper ...the 28 macro is a wolds 1st with the built in light ...i don't do super zooms but the 18-150 is the 1st one that would be acceptably sharp for me...the 22f2 is a gem ..a little sharper than the sony zeiss 24F1.8 at £800GBP  and 1/2 the size ....so if you want a compact, affordable APS-c outfit with some sharp lenses  thier really only is the M

EOS R - early samples that I like ...
8

I'm just going to post a few pictures from the new Canon EOS R - I think they look impressive although I'm not looking at exposure or composition. I won't be dropping the M-cameras to replace it but I'm certainly going to replace my DSLRs now. The new lens design and coatings manage to control lens flare very well and the lenses producing SunStars (diffraction spike) are doing a fine job of it.
.
This system isn't particularly small.  The lenses are almost EF-sized.  But as a substitute for DSLR the system is quite attractive.  The new lens designs are curious - with some sporting larger elements at the rear than at the front of the lens.  My EOS M6 isn't going anywhere.  I still think it's underappreciated.

Re: EOS R - early samples that I like ... - The old ones aren't that bad.

I originally got into the M systems with an M3/18-55 because my 6D was getting too heavy when out on my long walks. Since then, I have purchased an M10, M5 and M100 and all the M lenses (plus the Tamron 18-400). So, I think you could say I was a little biased towards the M system.

It's not without it's faults (in particular, I hate the over saturation of the M5 EVF), but I have produced some good pictures with the systems.

With my slow M100 and really bad 15-45, here's one picture I took

Then there's the really horrible M5 with the just downright awful 18-150.

And another

Finally, one from my ever so bad M3.

All pictures strainght from the camera - no processing done on them at all. There are not necessarily the best I've done - just a sample.

As you can see, I really MUST move to Sony, any day now

And on this one, a clear AMEN!

Well I like EOS-M.  Shortly after I bought my first (the original M) I joined a local photography club. I was surprised to find that most of the members had smallish bridge cameras. When I queried why people who take photography seriously enough to belong to a club didn't have DSLRs, almost all of them replied "Oh I do, it's just too big and heavy to bring with me". So right away I knew I'd made a good choice.

I now have the M5 and 5 of the 8 available native lenses, plus some lighting and flash gear, and I'm very happy with it. I won't be replacing anything now until it breaks.

The EOS M6 is pretty much my perfect travel camera (even though it's by no means perfect!). I had a trip at the beginning of last month to Lisbon - long weekend, no hold luggage, but I got M6 and 5 lenses in. Carried it around perfectly happily in the highest temperatures ever recorded in the city.
Have just come back from Turkey, and again, carried the whole outfit around just about everywhere. I simply couldn't have done it with a full frame model, or even several smaller sensor models, and certainly not with the IQ available for the size. Not once on either trip did I need anything faster than I had available.
Pics when I get round to it...

Marco, I think You missed the point.

And while there is good chunk of the truth in your stories, there is more to it.

Nature of the people is to evolve, to strive for better if possible. If things were different in some sense, I wouldn´t even NEED a camera at all. But here we are, in the market full of choices. The "leader manufacturer" of the photo gear asks very high price and lets down quite a lot of people. Yes, they cannot do camera for everybody, but that´s not the problem that´s happening.

I mosly appreciate your opinions, but this truly reminds me of the piano player playing on the Titanic. All is good, no panic!

Look: This one of my needs is really not THAT niche:

I want a black box. Ideally small black box, with a shutter button and hardware so I can get digital picture out of it. It should be best box available, and I don´t really care about any other feautre.

Well, to make best image, it takes good sensor, and good choice of good lens.

Does EOS M or EOS R (choices) deliver any of that? I mean in competition?

No, it notoriously lags behind.

If you took some strenghts of Canon and showed us WHY and WHERE it is better, that would be fair. But this remorse, I had quite enough (of Canon). I only pitty myself for not seeing it enough so I got back from Nikon.

I hope you continue with making awesome images with your EOS system. It´s not all that bad after all...

LOL:))))

I'm happy with my M5 and selection of lenses I have — no plans for a new camera or new lenses in the near feature:) I like the image quality, and I like the camera. I also have and using my original EOS-M (the second one used by my daughter). My almost new 5DMKII is permanently connected to Voigtlander 40mm and still get much less use than EOS-M cameras:))

I enjoy reading about new Canon cameras, but I'm no more jumping on each new release:)) I'm in my happy place:)

It was an old wild west film set in Almeria. The public (mainly spanish) could dress up - and these are some who did.

Then there's the really horrible M5 with the just downright awful 18-150.

All pictures strainght from the camera - no processing done on them at all. There are not necessarily the best I've done - just a sample.

As you can see, I really MUST move to Sony, any day now

Forget image quality for a moment, I want to know what the **** is happening in photo #2

It was an old wild west film set in Almeria. The public (mainly spanish) could dress up - and these are some who did.
