Canon STM lens

I am migrating from Nikon to Canon and just purchased an 80D coupled with an inexpensive Canon EF-S 24mm STM lens to use while I learn to use the 80D.  I plan to purchase the 24-70 2.8 once I save up for it.

While waiting on my savings to increase, I have to ask if I made the right choice with the STM lens as a starter.  I shoot primarily landscapes along with some travel.

The camera and lens arrive tomorrow and now I question the STM as a place to start.  What are the thoughts of the experts out there?

Thank you.

Is 24mm going to be wide enough for your landscapes?  On the 80D, 24mm will give you a field of view equivalent of approximately 38mm.

The 24 STM is a great street lens and adequate for landscapes.  I I’ve also used it for large groups of people.  The lens is sharp with some corner softening T widestnapreature.  But as mentioned, it’s maybe a bit too narrow for some landscape use.  My only real complaint is no IS, although it isn’t really a big problem.  2.8 certainly helps.  STM focusing is fairly quick and quiet, although not as quiet as STM zooms.  Give it a try.

STM is just the focusing motor in the lens, its very smooth and geared toward video use.  It works just fine for photos though.

With the Canon crop factor (1.6 vs 1.5 on Nikon) the 24mm lens gives, as others stated, a 38mm FOV equivalent.  I have the same lens and I find it great as a walk around lens, it can cover landscapes just fine along with day to day shooting.  But if it was my only lens I'd find it very limiting.

If you want a more versatile lens check out the 18-55 STM (kit lens), they're usually around $100 used and are quite good lenses for the price.  You may find a EF 24-70 limiting for landscape or general use on a crop.  A better all around zoom may end up being the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 if you need a faster lens, or the EF-S 15-85 if you dont mind a variable aperture, though both will set you back quite a bit of $$.

Since you'll have the 24mm, try it for a while to see if 24mm is wide enough for your intended uses before you buy the 24 -70. For me 24 isn't wide enough on crop for a general use lens. The 17-55, 15-85 or either of the 18-135 would be a better choice IMO.
