32mm f/1.4L lens - SAMPLES (PICS)
9

.
Canon Australia have posted some preliminary sample photographs from the new lens. I was unable to link directly to them but have uploaded them at the same resolution as found.. I'm sorry to say that they seem to be taking very "ordinary" shots with it (as usual). Note that as per Canon's own rules, these will be unedited JPEGS from the camera. It confirms what I thought the images ought to look like although I'm sorry they didn't take more "exciting" shots with it for our first impressions.
.
Three images at the bottom are from Canon USA and are linked from their site... and include SPECS as supplied. These are higher resolution. Note the shutter speeds used!!! There's a lot of light to play with now. This is why Canon felt that IS isn't necessary with this lens.
.
What are your thoughts?

Re: 32mm f/1.4L lens - SAMPLES (PICS)

The performance looks pretty good from what I'm seeing so far - nothing unlikable about the rendering immediately stands out, and examples wide open look nice. This will be a popular lens.

EDIT: Ok there's some CA on the final picture (closeup of a metal stamp/disk/seal or something), but the blown reflection on contrasting edges like that is kinda worse-case scenario when wide open, so to be expected.

I downloaded and paid most attention to these three images from the Canon USA site.

First an observation: All three images were taken with the exact same lens in April 2018, but with two different M5 cameras (the architecture and the portrait were taken with the same camera body). I would assume that much care was taken by Canon in picking this early specimen of the lens for its marketing samples, as well as the two bodies (which have succeeding serial numbers). I would expect the technical qualities of the images to be very high.

And although my personal initial testing of this lens would be at f/4 or f/5.6, which would probably produce it's optimum images, I am rather impressed with the above images that are wide open or close to it. Although none of the three subjects gives us a really good sense of acuity from center to edges or corners, the architecture image, even at a wide aperture, looks promising at least in one corner and to the upper edge (though what are those scratches in the image, since they don't look like contrails). I also like its smooth tonal renditions in the early afternoon light. The sun may have been softened by the clouds, but the color is nicely rendered.

The wide open f/1.4 portrait impresses me for the smooth transitions of out of focus elements across the near space, into the focused area of the portrait, back to smooth transitions fading to the rear. At f/1.4 I don't expect the portrait area to be tack sharp, but the model's left eye, assumed to be the focus point, has rich detail. I like this portrait.

I assume the third image is to show the lens' close up ability wide open in low light. I'd like to know more about the subject and its size before assessing it any further.

All in all, these images are encouraging. I'm still tiptoeing (from your other thread), but this is the lens I have talked about and wanted for my M5 for over a year. Once again, we'll see.

By the way, you asked about the (not included) lens hood in another thread, but I don't know if anyone answered. The Canon USA site is listing the new ES-60 hood for US $55.

The "Canon EW-60E" hood for the 11-22mm lens sold for just AUD $15 (US $10.75) here in Australia. Some sites here have it listed for up to AUD $25. EDIT: RRP in Australia is still AUD $15.
.
But US $55 is a shameless cash grab. It costs canon about $0.85c each to have these made... possibly less with newer production costs. I wonder if the hood is compatible between lenses? It's sad but I'll have to get the EW-60E hood for protection.
.
sort of related: Recently Canon Australia dropped the price of all their Canon lens caps to around $10 so I've been buying up everything from 82mm down to 58mm. Hopefully this new lens hood won't be so overpriced. US $55 is AUD $76.70 and THAT is WAY too much money for this accessory.

ES-60 Lens hood: (Is this a JOKE?)

I found this online titled: "ES-60 - EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM"
.
Shown "attached" to the 32mm f/1.4 lens... Might explain the $75 figure? Looks like I might not be buying a lens hood if this is what they had in mind. Seriously Canon, it's to protect the lens from flare and impact... Surely this is either not to scale or the image was randomly chosen.
.

FOUND ONLINE:  Titled as found: ""ES-60 - EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM" from a camera dealer.

CORRECTED : Based on measurements and the fitting of other hoods, I've altered the image to what I suspect is closer to the actual look of the hood.  The lens will be closely fitting to the base of the hood with no real gaps showing.  This type of barrel-shaped hood isn't as popular or appealing as Petal-type hoods.  It's also much larger than I would like.  At least the body of the lens unit will be fairly small without the hood.

...MORE SAMPLES (PICS)
1

.
It looks like more pics by people who have never used an f/1.4 lens before. Why is it that Canon insists on sending their samples to inexperienced photographers? I'd also question some of the exposures and they don't appear to be ideal. Perhaps it's to show how everyday people can take pictures with lenses and cameras. What happened to the days of showing the best possible output of a product? Note that the punchier shots are of the lens itself... which have been edited and photoshopped. The sample shots are meant to be JPEGs from the camera without any editing.
.

This one is a bit small. Posted as found.

Now this is something I want, like every samples before this, it's up to us to make the lens shine, instant buy for me though, I've been waiting for it long enough. I wonder what will be the retails price for it in Vietnam.

Thanks Marco. People complain about the lens being overpriced, and I wish it was less expensive. But I think Canon nailed the price on this... if it was over US$500 I would have waited... as it is, I'm buying it straight away.

I see Canon paid professional photographers to produce some stunning showcase images for the EOS R system that was just launched.  Some of the images I just found from their 50mmL and 28-70mmL RF lenses have left me utterly stunned.
.
You're right when you state that "it's up to us to make their lens shine".    I guess DPREVIEW will get around to doing something with this lens and running a review .... but right now they're still trying to get their articles on the R and RF lenses out so it might be a while.
.
Can't wait to put this lens through some paces when it lands here in Australia.  Looking forward to seeing plenty of shots from Vietnam as well!  You might even get it before the rest of the world!

Usually Vietnam will be the last to get the M lenses, and as I said before, the official Canon retailer still don't sell M lenses beyond the kit lenses. I had to order 28mm, 55-200mm from B&H.

I hope they sell this lens here though, quite a good all-around lens, I don't want to order through B&H and get hassled by custom office again.

Maybe I should snap an M100 and an M5 too to save myself from changing lenses ever again.

Considered EF 50mm F/1.4 and its hood, this corrected is plausible.

EF-M 32mm becomes 51mm equivalently.

If I were you, and want to get a hold of this new lens, I would take a quick trip to Bangkok and just get it there, usually they are on par with having new lenses in stock, and on top of that you get 7% VAT refund when you fly back to Vietnam.

Lens hoods are overrated, and a protective filter also does a good job protecting the front element.

Unfortunately, they're not overrated. I don't have a lens hood and I have had to use my hand as a lens hood often while clicking with my 22mm lens to prevent ugly glares.

These are undoubtedly taken in JPEG and haven't been processed since they're from one of the Canon support pages. Some odd choices of aperture have been selected as well... not ideal for showing off the capabilities of the new lens. They don't appear to be taken with JPEG in mind either... it's as though the photographers were shooting for RAW, hence the darker than ideal exposures. it's a bit of a shame but seasoned photographers should be able to read between the lines when they look at the images here.

this is a staple lens for the M series along with the 22mm.

Sample images ain't perfect but enough to show its major target market, (consumers/enthusuasts/ casual shooters) how this lens will render, shot in apertures it will be mostlly get used with.
