Canon 4000D is worth it?!

Hi there,

well, I have fujifilm x-s1 (Bridge Camera with 2/3" sensor) and i'm not satisfied with the image quality it produces and I need to upgrade. right now I consider buying a canon 4000d / (T100 I guess) as it costs roughly 290USD. also I'm thinking about having Nikon D3400 (400USD) or D5300 (450USD) but I don't have enough money for these. keep in mind that I can save about 150 in 4 months.

To sum up, I've got 4 options here:

1-To buy Canon 4000D and invest 150$ for lenses
2-To wait for 4 months and buy D3400 with a cheap prime lens
3-To wait for 4 months and buy D5300 with it 18-55mm only
4-To stick to my Fujifilm x-s1
Share your thoughts
thanks in advance

Just my opinion... the features you miss out on with the n000D line are worth more than the money you save. In other words, get a second-hand nn0D rather than a new n000D for the same price.

Welcome Abdo'

IMHO you'd be much better off with a used or refurb 600D or 100D. Here's DPReview's write-up...

4000D Release

This 100D kit on eBay has the same sensor, but sports a newer and better processor. Plus this particular item also includes the much improved (and quiet) 18-55 STM version of the kit lens...

New 100D Kit on eBay

Samples from the 100D

Good luck with your decision!

IMO, your best option is to buy the SL2 with the kit lens from Canon refurbished (see link below).  The image quality from the new EF-S 18-55mm f/4.0-5.6 STM lens is outstanding.  A few examples of this combination are below.  Click on the "original size" link to see the best image quality.

Re: Canon 4000D is worth it?!

1) Lenses really matter.

2) You can  never buy the lens more cost effective than in the kit, at least by Canon

3) The best  camera is the one you have, now.

Good for you!  In today's camera market there really isn't much of a gap between the image quality.  You will get wonderful photos from the D5200 and it will allow you to grow your photography skills as you wish to.

@Abdo777x I'm in the same boat as you, since I'm at the point to upgrade from my X-S1 which I've had for a bit over 3 years now, and I really feel I'm missing out on image quality, especially in low light.

I'd LOVE to hear your stories about the experience you have with your D5300. What good or bad surprises did you have? What do you miss about the X-S1? How much did you use the X-S1? Does the upgrade already provide you with better photos in terms of image quality? Do you find that lower light photos are (way) better as compared to the X-S1? How much do you miss the zoom capabilities? How much can you crop your photos from the new camera to make up for the lack in zoom? Up to what ISO can you shoot without sactificing to much in image quality? How much do you prefer the new camera's bokeh to that of the old camera? Do you use the flash on the new camera? Are you keeping the X-S1?

My (bad) experience with the X-S1 was completely self-inflicted. I wanted a camera that would force me to learn the FUNdamentals of photography. I knew that it would suffer in low light, and that the sharpness would not be great at max zoom due to camera shake, smaller aperture, hazy atmoshpere etc... I do love the X-S1 handling ... how does it compare to that of the Nikon now?

To what extent do you think the X-S1 provides "bad" image quality, as opposed to: if you had better experience in photography in general (and understood the X-S1 better maybe); could you tweak your ISO / aperture / focus / shutter speed more effectively, or do you find that the Nikon is just so much easier to get good photos with?

Please understand that those are the questions I'd ask myself, and getting someone (you) moving over to DSLR from the X-S1 is a rare find, that's why I feel the need to pick your brain. If you are up to it, we can even discuss off-forum.

look, at the moment, I don't have the x-s1 in my hands but I'll get it in the next few weeks and to be honest while I was using x-s1 I didn't know much about manual settings I've putting it on Auto and shoot but The d5300 beats the x-s1 in almost every aspect except for the zoom But to what extent I don't know right now because I don't have the camera or even its photos. if you can wait for a couple weeks more I'll do a detailed comparison between x-s1 and d5300 in every aspect (Dynamic range- colors- low light- zoom)

Hope you'll understand

There are some questions I can answer

1-What good or bad surprises did you have?

=good ones are: the camera is lighter- settings are easier- articulating screen- WiFi- (used as a remote and to transfer pics)- more colorful pics

=bad ones are: optical viewfinder(because I wear glasses I can't see in the viewfinder if I'm not wearing them) - you'll need maybe at least 2 extra lenses one for telephotos and f/1.8 50mm for bokeh (you'll still get the bokeh in 18-55mm but you need your subject to be far away from background)

2-What do you miss about the X-S1?

=digital viewfinder (doesn't force me to wear my glasses)

3-How much did you use the X-S1?

=not much maybe I took 1500 pics

4-Does the upgrade already provide you with better photos in terms of image quality?

=of course yes. better color, better dynamic range larger image size that I can crop to 100% without sacrificing image quality

5-How much do you miss the zoom capabilities?

Not much because you can crop in the image but with cropping you would get about 15x zoom

6-Up to what ISO can you shoot without sactificing to much in image quality?

=

This was shoot on 6400 iso

7-How much do you prefer the new camera's bokeh to that of the old camera?

the new one is much better (you can get better bokeh on x-s1 but you'll need lots of light and maximize your zoom and move far away and stabilize your hands which is inconvenient and I'm planning to buy 1.8 50mm for bokeh that will beat x-s1 completely)

This comparison might not be 100% true but Overall the d5300 outclass the x-s1

as I said before if you can wait for a couple of weeks I'll do a detailed comparison with sample pics

Lots of advantages shooting with a DSLR.  And actually some disadvantages too.  Weigh your needs carefully.  You might even check out mirrorless (esp the Canon M-Series if you shoot video).

BTW you guys are likely to get a lot more feedback about this camera over in the Nikon Forum...
