Suddenly found myself exploring Sony more seriously
6
  • Single SD card slot is regrettable for a $2000 Semi-Pro camera
  • Breaking EF-M lens is disappointing, but not surprising.
  • Lack of IBIS, is kind of a deal breaker for me.

I'm not in a market for FF yet, but If I have to buy one today (in theory), it'll be Sony A7-III for sure.  I didn't care fore sony but after seeing both Nikon Z7/Z6 and Canon EOS-R, Sony is suddenly looking better than ever.

EOS-R is a decent release, but it is not a Sony A7-III Killer that I had hope for.

I'm sad about IBIS.  I was hoping Canon would adopt IBIS through its entire line.  I had hope to buy an IBIS Canon DSLR to use with cheapo Canon 400mm f/5.6 and my 200mm f/2.8 L without stabilization.  Oh well.

As for me, I don't really invest in cameras and lenses (there are much better investment tools out there...;-))

But I simply buy photo gear in order to take picture...;-)

Re: Canon mounts investment

I keep an 80D so that I can use EF-s. I wish I had an EOS-M just for the 22mm f/2. I have EF also. I'd be willing to buy more of either of those three mounts.

Sorry for ranting in a Canon forum while I don't even have a Canon camera atm but lemme explain...

I recently abandoned Nikon 1 and during last week or so have been looking into various systems to see where I might go in the future (once I have some money again).

Funny that before a few days ago, I haven't even considered Canon M, but upon looking into it some more, I really liked what I saw.

It made me remember about 12 years ago when I was choosing my DSLR system (I had a Canon compact at the time), one of the appeals Canon had was a clear upgrade path from APS-C to FF. Get an APS-C camera, some neat FF lenses, of course a few APS-C lenses for portability and the upgrade path was clear. I didn't chose that path but lots of people did for good reason. Lots of people who started with a 350D in 2005 now have 5D as well as 80D or something using the same FF lenses (with some APS-C ones thrown in). Smooth transition.

So as I was looking into Canon M, I thought Canon is gonna do the same again with MILC, right? Wrong. Canon M is now like Nikon 1 all over again - relegated to an afterthought while the company concentrates on the expensive stuff and keeping the series separate.

We yet have to see where Nikon is gonna go with its APS-C MILC, but geez as much as I dislike Sony cameras (just my personal feeling, no offence to anyone), it's now them who are using the old successful Canon's strategy that Canon itself is abandoning.

EF-M roped me in with the 22/2 and 11-22. Offer great deals like that and I will buy them.

Not really feeling the RF offerings as of yet. (Nikon speaks to me more with a road map full of 1.8 primes.)

EF is all fine and well, except I really never plan to use DSLRs again.

No sympathy for Canon, this is really bad.
While I understand the need for the new R mount specifications, Canon  should at least have the decency to make the M flange distance the same as the R to maintain compatibility, give customers an upgrade path and protect lens investment.
I can't believe they never thought about that when designing the M series.
Gonna keep my M gear, but my next body purchase will be other brand.

Maybe Canon did think about that, and maybe M was originally planned for full frame too. Maybe cannon is afraid for cross-compatibility of Sigma lenses via EF+MC11, giving Sigma lens owners the position to choose which camera brand they like the most for their lens owners, and maybe the new mount is a strategy to protect Canons own eco system.

Maybe Canon wants to protect full frame performance by not giving access to future full frame glass at bargain priced M camera's, especially not a high quality 50mm.

One thing is for sure: Canon did think about this. But als Canon has to change strategy if circumstances change in an unpredicted way.

Gonna keep my M gear, but my next body purchase will be other brand.

Could give you best of both worlds, as you have two systems to choose your focal lengths from.

I think Canon did think about it already. The story between EF-S and EF, tells us that Canon doesn't what FF users use APS-C lenses, despite both have the same flange distance...

Since the release of the EOS R, Canon really wanted people to choose between FF vs APS-C.

Recently I moved to EOS M system sold all my EF lenses except the 100mm IS macro , IMHO in EOS-M only 1 lens is awesome, the 22mm. I abandoned the idea of FF just to heavy for my taste (and since I don't print out my pics nor selling pics I don't need it)  if I want wide I ll just go with light primes like the Loawa 9mm.

I don't have a problem with M lenses not working on the R system any more than I did with my efs lenses not working on full frame. Apparently they will now work on R. R lenses not working on the M doesn't bother me either. Expensive, large lenses belong on the R. My mix of all the M lenses mostly purchased as refurbished on sale was approximately $1200, a bit more than 24-105. The non use on the R of my M lenses isn't upsetting nor am I likely to put a $1000 lens on my M5. However, I will rarely use an efs lens on my M. If Canon considers the M system as the replacement for the Rebels or D series, I am satisfied.

I am sure they thought about it.  IMO, they don't see a long term future for the M line.  I think the EF-M mount will be replaced by a unified RF mount and Canon will follow Sony's example by making crop lenses work natively on FF and crop sensor bodies alike.  Heck, I doubt there will be any difference in the mount for crop and FF R cameras.

This reminds me during the 70s contemplating a Canon SLR - think it might be an FT and I was lucky I did not purchase as it was out of stock. The battery consumption turned out to be a problem for this model and then Canon went on to change the lens mount later.  So they do not have a very illustrious record of real legacy mount support. Gen X and newer users would have started on the EOS series and will not know this.

Yes, it's time to review what is viable if you want to hang onto good optics and I'd think in the end, a compact with a higher zoom range of 4x to 6x may serve most users better.

I would applaud Nikon for being responsible for a greener world where even my Nikon AI-S lenses from over 30 years ago are still viable on both Nikon and M4/3 cameras.  I was surprised how well they performed even on my Lumix GX85, a stop gap buy pending this new Nikon Z-series release. I'd wait to see how it will accomodate non-Canon lenses before I even look at another Canon mount.

I totally agree! The new R to me is just another expensive new camera that I really don't need. I still plan on using my 7D II for sports, wildlife and some low light concert work but I'm sold on my M5. Took it on it's first trip about a week ago and it was like "freedom". I'll be getting the new M32 for sure.
