Re: M4/3 sensors...

A bit of a newB here asking questions, but looking at the DPR "Scoring" of the newer M4/3 cameras coming out, I compare them (and some mirrorless APS-C cameras) with an old 16MP Olympus E-PM2 that I have from 2012 in terms of Raw files and low light/high ISO performance (where I like to spend a lot of time) and I wonder if DPR has maybe listed the E-PM2 higher than it should be? I also have a Lumix GX8, and am disapointed at the noise levels I see, and attempt to correct in LR for the GX8 compared to the Oly. I get the MP differential, but every time I compare the new cameras coming out to the E-PM2, they don't fare as well in the DPR comparisons (even the Lumix GH5S!), and wonder if it's actually a glitch, a newer way of testing since the Oly came out, or what?  Given the results I get in the comparisons, I'm wondering how long I can keep the the old thing running, and should I just buy another? DPR, am I reading this wrong?

I think you have very special E-PM2, exquisite and unique. Also I think you should continue your comparisons until you meet camera that equal or better than yours.

Re: M4/3 sensors...

There are features on some MFT cameras that make low light shooting possible without relying on the sensor.  IBIS or DUAL IS, and iDynamic, and highlight/shadows adjustments in camera can greatly help with low light shooting.  When they are tuned well, shooting video at night at 3200 to 4000 looks like 800 ISO did 5 years ago.

Nevertheless.  If you never get to use it and learn how to use it, you'll never truly know what you can do with the new line of MFT cameras.
Before you make any huge investment into a system.  Try rent or borrow a new camera and test it out.  Since you already know the Panasonic system, you'll have an advantage setting up the dynamics of the exposure without much problems.  Then push these cameras to the limits to see what they can do.  Then you'll know exactly if you want them.

Good luck and have fun.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Is there any way that I can direct this question to the staff at DPR? The question is really about their scoring of the cameras on their "Conclusion" pages.

In my case it was the brother E-PL5 that introduced me to the 16MP sensor after some years of the E-PL1 with 12MP sensor. Peace at last, must better performance in all light. Used mostly with Panasonic 14-45mm.

Later bought the Oly 12-40/2.8 and suddenly the E-PL5 was a much better camera, it was definitely worth the cost and weight and bulk. Though later added the tiny Panasonic 12-32mm for when I feel weak.

The E-P5 dropped in price below E-PL5 here (Australia a few years back), so why not? Now I really and truly did have peace at last. The niceness of the 16MP sensor, the availability of 0 second anti-shock to get rid of those occasional shocky shots that I had with E-PL5 and of course the truly lovely 5 axis IBIS that got rid of the slight blurring that the old 2 axis IBIS often delivers. I'm settled now and never need to "upgrade".

But the fact remains that it is the 16MP sensor that delivered most of the joy, plenty of pixels and all working nicely. Raw files treated with DxO Photolab and Prime noise reduction get the best out of lenses and sensor.

In fact I'm no sure why I still look in the M4/3 forums as I have no desire to get anything else.

Regards.... Guy
