Canon T5i - Kit Lens vs. EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM for Video

Hey everyone,

I currently shoot classical guitar performance videos on my Canon T5i with the kit lens. I did a bit of research and read good reviews about the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM lens. It seems to be a good value for it's low price. I'm wondering if anyone thinks it's enough of an upgrade from the kit lens for video to spend the $129. Thanks so much!

Just a caution

I'm trying to learn more about video crop factors.

Here's some to think about.

Check what your kit lens focal length is set at when you're using it for lessons.

Yes and no. On the one hand, it's a little sharper than the kit lens when wide open. On the other hand, f/2.8 is not that much brighter than the f/3.5 on the kit lens when the kit lens is zoomed out. Also, image stabilization is very handy on the kit lens if you're not using a tripod.

There is some quality benefit, but I think in most cases, not a lot.

This is great info - thanks so much!  It will be stable on a tripod, not going to use it for vlogging.  I'll be sure to keep it wide open.  This helps a lot, thank you!!

It is a good lens and worth the price, IMO.  However, it is not stabilized and if you are not using a tripod the video might be shaky if the camera is handheld.  Especially if you are moving around.  Many, many vloggers use the EF-S 10-18mm IS STM lens for video.  I have this lens I use on the SL2 and the video from it looks great and is smooth.  I have seen this lens on sale in Canon's refurb store for down to $189.  If you are patient and diligent you can probably pick one up for this price or close to it.

I'd recommend upgrading your lighting instead.

Awesome!!  I'll definitely look into that lens.  Thanks so much!
