HELP! almost bought a GM5,..

I almost bought a GM5, then realized the add was from 2 years ago!

So, for a second body to my GX7 should I get a GF10 or a GX850??,. and is either camera worth it??

Honestly I would buy a "lightly used" or NEW GM5 if I could find one but it seems like there is a slim chance of that happening.

(unless we are surprised by a new GM7 in September,.. (wishful thinking??)

Any help is appreciated!

Cheers and happy shooting!

Hi Mike,

Are you looking for a smaller body size?  If so, look at Oly E-PL7 - 8 or 9.  Or, if you don't mind the same size, or similar size body, how about the Panasonic GX85?  I just picked up a used (nearly mint) GX85 to accompany my Oly E-M5 II.  The GX85 is a fantastic camera and also known in Japan (Asia) as the successor to your GX7, as the GX7 II.

Good luck in your search!

Re: HELP! almost bought a GM5,..

It was an old eBay add from a seller who didn’t remove the add,.

(hosted by another company, which seems a little dodgy but I took the bait and said I would buy it only to be emailed about 25 mins later saying that “we are the hosting site and we don’t know if the seller still has the camera,,.)

so I emailed the seller and am awaiting a response,.

Most GM5 owners like them so much that they have no intention of sellng them.

I don’t know where “GM7” came from it is as fictitious a name as the rumour that it might arrive in September

Any help is appreciated!

All “lumbering tanks” compared to the GM5 I am afraid to say

The unique thing about the GM5 is that it is a very small body with an EVF.  It's an EVF with some limitations, but, hey, on a body that size I'm happy to have any EVF.

You can use the LCD momnitor most of the time to carefully compose your image, but in the event that strong back lighting washes out the LCD monitor, the EVF is stilll pretty functional.

The GX800/850 is apperently a pretty nice small camera with seevral good features over the GM5, BUT there is no viewfinder, and the cards are microSD. Nice new shutter design however.

That's the latest tiny size body from Panasonic. The closest from Olympus is the EPL9.

I'm not planning to sell my GM5 but if I had to replace it I'd probably consider the PEN-F. I find that viewfinder is invaluable.

nope  same shutter  the gx80/85 is the one with the new shutter

Re: HELP! almost bought a GM5,..

So then I wonder if my best bet on a second body camera is the GF7 or GF8??

I do like the specs for the GX9 (except for battery life and seemingly less grip than the GX7)

I'd wait until September 25th and see what new cameras Panasonic announces.

I'd avoid GF7 or GF8 as they are cheap entry level cameras.

If the size of the GX9 is acceptable to you then:

  • GX9 if you can afford it - you will get 20MP and other nice features
  • GX85 if you want something cheaper and don't care about the the tilting viewfinder and 20MP

If you must have something smaller than GX9 then I'd consider a used GM5 or the EPL8 which has an optional viewfinder attachment.

Re: HELP! almost bought a GM5,..

I'm trying to take this decision, I find a good bargain of a sealed kit, new old stock from official italian importer...
Why this camera is a "cult", dimensions can't be the only reason!
449 euros with 12/32 kit, 399 for the same kit with GM1 body... brand new, full italian warranty (and is a plus for future problems).

I just don't like composing using an LCD at all, and use the VF 99.9% of the time. I think the VF on the GM5 is just fine--no problems at all. I really, really want a Ricoh GR. But without a VF I just can't do it. It's why I got the GM5. The one I got is a beater--not mint at all. I just wanted the smallest quality camera with a VF. Sometimes my E--M1 (and even my LX100) are too big but I still want a good camera with me.
