Switch from D7100 to Fuji XT2?

Hi All,

I would like some help and opinions here. So i currently have :

Nikon D7100

Sigma 18-35mm 1.8

sigma 50-150mm 2.8

Nikon 10.5mm fish eye 2.8

I do a lot of travel photography, street and portraits. I have had my camera since 2014 but i have heard a lot of good things about the XT2 and picking it up the first time in the shop i loved the weight. But can i trust this brings out better quality images than the d7100 with my sigma art lenses? i was thinking of the:

XT2 with the 18-55 2.8 and

either the 35mm 1.4 or f/2?.

Has anyone switched from a similar set up? Please advise

Thanks

I switched from Nikon(D7000+Sigma 18-35/1.8 art+Sigma 105mm macro) to an X-T2 and some prime lenses and overall I'm very happy with the switch. I absolutely love the dials and Fuji's amazing lenses. Fuji's best primes are at least as good as Sigma's art lenses. They also have the benefit of being made of metal and several of them are weather sealed and have OIS.

The only downside with Fuji I think is their X-trans sensor, but with the appropriate software I still get nice results.

Fuji XT2 or Stick with Nikon

What would be your motivation in changing systems vs upgrading your Nikon body?  What to you expect the X-T2 to bring to the table that you would miss with the Nikon system?

I think it is worth renting the X-T2 and trying it for a week when you can do some extensive testing.   That's what I did. I rented the X-T2 and the X-Pro2 when we went on vacation.  I brought along my Canon 5D2.

I was looking for a smaller camera for travel.  I found the X-T2 not much smaller than my ungripped 5D2. It was just before the release of the X-E3, so I rented the X-E2s for the weekend and decided the X-E3 was just what I needed. I pre-ordered it and it arrived 2 weeks before we left for London and Paris.  I love the Fuji!

I came from shooting with Leica rangefinders dating back to 1967 and Fujis just fee right.  If you started in the digital PASM age, you might like them or you might not.

I switched from D7200 to T23 now H1

The only thing where the T2 is abit weak is tracking fast targets (birds, sport,..) compared to the Nik

Otherwise I much prefer the T2 vs the Nik, no regret

The T3 is supposed to be much better for fast action, sport, wildlife

I am planing to make similar switch - from D7200 to X-T2 ot X-T20.

I just want to carry lighter camera, D7200 + 18-140mm is about 1.2 kg.

Now wait to see what will be the prices after X-T3 announcement.

Thanks Doug, my reason for thinking of switching is because of the weight factor. I tend to travel very often nowadays and the weight discourages me from taking a lot of pictures when on the go. Abit of a tough decision here as i have been in the nikon eco system for a while. I would lend my friends xt1 and test it out this weekend.

In terms of image quality would you consider fuji better or nikon? and which prime would you rather from the 35mm f2/1.4. Thanks

if you wait till photokina you can see what the XT-3 will bring to the table. And if rumors are correct you’ll even get it less than what XT-2 initially released at.

they're quite different lenses regarding size, weight, IQ (though both are quite good), availability or not of OIS etc....

The first one is about 300+ gr and have OIS, the second one is over 600 gr and does not have OIS.

I prefer first one or 16-50mm

Image quality mostly lies in the lens and Fuji's lenses are amazing like I said Of course there are plenty of amazing lenses for Nikon as well, so I wouldn't really say that one is better than the other.

However in my particular case it was an upgrade in terms of image quality. My current Fuji lenses (Fujinon 16/1.4 + Fujinon 80mm macro) are better than any previous lens I've ever owned. And the X-T2 also has a bit better noise performance and dynamic range than the D7000 had.

Your needs sound similar to mine.  I'm going for the new X-T100 as my lightweight ILC choice.  Feels great in the hand, has a Bayer 24mp sensor, and the great articulating flip LCD.  Since I don't need video, it's a great option that leaves $$ left over for glass.

I did not switch but I have always been a Nikon user with lots of good glass. Even after I cleaned up my glass closed a lot, I felt like something smaller and lighter to travel with.

This s why I took x-t20 and honestly I love it. I cannot judge if it will be an update for you. For me, as reference I have the D850, the quality is good enough. I mostly miss the cropping ability and the OOF from my full frame. But less often than I expected.

Fuji lenses are really goodfrom wide open. Even the low 16-50 is a very good traveling lens. The 16 is wonderful.

one advantage of Fuji is that jpegs are really good, so processing is often very light and does not always need to be done on RAW. Nikon is much worse in this.

my biggest regret is not leaving my D850 home when I travel, but it is that I bought a x-t20 instead of a x-t2. With a grip is just like a t2, but I really miss the joystick!!!! Changing focus point with the touch screen is a big no and with the keypad ... equally slow.

As for raw format. I tried them all .. I use adobe and in very few extreme cases SilkyPix or iridient.
