BIG print from 16MP m43
16

Just wanted to share my experience with my first really big print from m43.

My big prints are usually around 20x16, and they always turned out great.

I had a big blank space on a wall on my new home, so I figured I try to fill it with a really big print. After some measurements, I came up with the number: 48x32 That’s bigger that I ever printed.

So I chose a photo, resized it in Photoshop using the Preserve details 2.0, and sent it for print on canvas.

This photo is far from perfect. It was shot on a GH4, which has an AA filter, it was shot with the 14-140mm lens at f/6:3. And it was cropped to 14.9MP before resizing. I have to say I have much sharper photos made with my m43 gear, than this one. But I thought I try it anyway.

So how is the print ? Well, for its size, pretty damn good. At close inspection, it looks soft, but no pixelation or artifacts, just an overall softness. It looks really good just not pin sharp. As soon as you step back so you can see the print at a glance, without moving your eyes to scan it, it looks very sharp (at about 1,5 meters from the print)

Overall I was pleasantly surprised. I know a print from a photo with my GX85 and a better lens would look considerably better, this can be seen on my computer when compared to the GH4 photo I printed. I think a G9 with a great lens can print at this size and look sharp even on close inspection. 48x32 is pretty huge.

Here’s the photo:

I have printed on canvas at that same size using by Em5ii with no issues. If you look very closely to at an oil painting, you will see the brush strokes. Big pictures are not meant to be inspected, but seen from a sensible distance. Glad that you are happy with your result as I am with mine.

pic. Printing on canvas allows one to go a lot bigger than one would with the same file on regular paper. I use canvas a lot lately, especially for people where resolution is not very important.  It also can give a sort of painterly effect to the print that works well for portraits.

That’s ok because I prefer canvas for big prints anyway, I like that painterly effect. I never really liked big prints on photo or regular paper. Basically it looks like a highly detailed painting, and I love the colors.

And that pretty much says it all.

(You dont have to worry about pixel peeping a wall hanging. It should be viewed and enjoyed from a distance, as you said.)

It's always nice to be reminded of this however, as we photographers can get obsessed with that, sometimes.

M4/3 and big prints
11

I have bought my first M4/3 camera some months ago.

I had FF and APS-c cameras before and was very skeptical about printing big with my EM10-II. Then I had to take some shots for my wife's business advertisement. Some of the pics went for the web but some were supposed to be printed in A2 paper.

I processed everything with the Olympus viewer software but also converted ORF files to DNG and used LR for the same files.

It seems to me that LR squeezes a bit more of detail if ISO goes past 800 and the colors are also nicer in every ISO.

The prints came out very crist and detailed. I used my 12-40mm 2.8 and the cheap 40-150mm kit lenses, both very sharp.

I did not find any significant difference from my previous FF bodies for this intended purpose.

When viewed from a sane viewing distance, you can print essentially any size you want from an 8 megapixel file. The bigger the print, the further it needs to be viewed from to see the entire photo.

It's only when you get out the loupe/view the photo from a few inches away that 36, 42, 50mp resolution etc makes any difference in print quality.

As I run a studio I am printing all the time from tonnes of cameras old and new. There is more different in the choice of print tech than the camera tech at most normal sizes.

Of course as you print bigger more resolution helps, but this really kicks in in the 30" x 40" mark with close inspection, and we are talking about needs 36 mp and up to see a real difference.

A lot of that is due to how papers and printing actually robs resolution in the process.

I have a 30" x 40" print on my living room wall from an EM5.2 shot at night in london, it looks great!

I've printed up to 30x40 from the original E-M1 files and been very pleased with the results, both traditional prints and metal prints from Bay Photo through my Smugmug account.

That's a beautiful shot. I bet the print does look beautiful.

It does, I honestly didn't expect it to be that good at that size. And thinking it could have been even better if shot with a better lens and one of the newer cameras I'm confident now to do these kind of big prints

Re: BIG print from 16MP m43

The 30x40 prints I have had made from the E-M1 were captured with the 12-40mm f2.8 and I did no kind of special re-sizing. Just loaded the jpegs processed from raw to my Smugmug account and ordered the prints.

Beyond a certain print size (I think 10x15) the lab does its own interpolation of files before printing so any "other" work I might have done could have just gotten in the way of how they (and most labs I believe) do this kind of large printing.

They do, and I heard a few times that the algorithms in their printers are actually superior than the resizing tools in Photoshop.

But Adobe has introduced a new resize method in their newest versions, called Preserve Details 2.0, which uses AI to add the extra pixels with real information (collected from a database of real photos) On screen it seems to do a superb job when compared with older resizing methods, so I thoughts I give it a try.

It would have been interesting to print 2, one with the resizing done in PS, like I did, but also one where I would let the lab do their thing. The print wasn't cheap though so I guess I'll keep living wondering

Very much so. From a trip to The Courtauld Gallery last December:

If you are really interested in a print comparison then just crop and make a couple of inexpensive 8x10 prints.

Nice... That's perfect for a large print.  Some gallery track lighting will light that up real nice.  Can you imagine if that was on acrylic or metal print?  The sharpness would be more that enough.

4 years ago, I was one of those who bought into the marketing sales that you can't get good large prints from MFT or crop camera, and only a DSLR with full frame or larger would be able to print large prints.   That was until I had a photo lab print up a poster size photo print.  And from that day on,  I knew that 12 or 16mp MFT or APSC cameras can churn out huge prints with amazing up close detail better than it looks on a high rest computer monitor.

So what would be the best way to print large, if you want to see the smallest details? On a paper, acryl, metal  ...? And what resolution can be achieved - is there a way to print higher than 300 dpi? Let's say I would like to have a 30" x 40", with the best possible resolution. What would you recommend?

Yes, if you inspect a Seurat canvas or that of any of the other impressionists all you see is a mess of dots or splats..... Move back and the whole thing comes to life....
