Suggestions for G19 replacement.

Over the years, I have been a big fan of the G series Canon cameras.  Besides several Canon SLR cameras, I have owned a G9, G11,and am presently using a G16 for travel.

I now have the desire to purchase a new travel camera and would like suggestions on which model to consider.  The G7X seems to be a logical choice, but I am not up to date on current models.  I would also consider a Nikon CoolPix , since I have had and enjoyed several of these.  I also know that the Sony Cyber Shot RX100V gets glowing reviews.( so many good cameras to consider. )

I like the feature that permits an added external flash. I carry a case on my belt when I travel, so I don't need a very small , pocket-size camera. I like the size of my G16. I hardly ever use the viewfinder, so that's not an issue.  I flip up/out screen would be nice.  I don't mind carrying a spare battery, so battery life isn't a major factor.

A friend has a Nikon CoolPix that has a feature that allows him to capture specific colors. ie: only red with everything else in black and white.  I don't know what that feature is called.  Can a Cannon G7X do that ?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yea, time to read-up on the latest cameras available.

I just bought a G7X II at the Canon "refurbished" store.  I did a lot of reading and YouTube watching before buying.

I also have a G11 and a G15.  The newer G7X II is FAR ahead of the G15 in all respects.  Well the battery life could be a little better, but.  The G7X II picture quality is very close if not on par with my SL1 (ILC/DSLR). The G7X II is also a little smaller than the G15/G16.

I think everything you want is in the G7X II, except the external flash capability.

The G7X II is my 4th G-series camera (G1, G5, G12) and serves as a lightweight alternative to my DSLR gear. It really is an excellent camera, my only disappointment being the absence of external flash support. I bought the HF-DC2 flash but it is a poor substitute for the 270EX II I used with the G12; if I feel I really need the extra flash, I'll use the G12.

Re: Suggestions for G19 replacement.

Thanks Mike and Dave.  My first impression was that the G7X would be the next one I should purchase. I was a bit put off after I read the review were on dpreview.  The review was not very positive, with a pretty long list of "cons".  That's why I decided to post my questions here in the hope of finding some members who have used that camera.

That was a good point about the lack of an attachment for an external flash. I still have the G16, and it actually has a pretty good built-in flash. Also I'm not too troubled about the rather short battery life.  I always buy and carry a spare.

Do you have any information on the facility that allows shooting in only one color ?  I never saw that until a friend showed me his Nikon CoolPix 900.  I wonder if that is possible on the G7X.

I have more of an urge rather than a need for a new camera.  I think I own 7 or 8 Canon cameras and they have all served my needs well.  In a month, I'm going out to Albuquerque, NW where I will attend the Hot Air Balloon Festival. I mention that because Canon always has a very large display and tent set up there.  I believe they are a major sponsor. While at the Canon tent, it is possible to use any of their cameras.  They give you the SD card and let you take as many pictures as you want.  You then return the camera and keep the card.  Great promotion !  I plan to see if I can use the G7X. ( assuming I don't pop for one before )

I'd like to hear from others who are using the G7X to see if they are satisfied with the performance of that camera.

Thanks again for your comments.

Re: Suggestions for G19 replacement.

Sueanne,

Just to clarify.  Are you saying the G16 is a better camera, or are you saying I should just be satisfied with what I have ?

Sorry to be so confused with your response.

Re: Suggestions for G19 replacement.

Keep the G16...and buy a G7X II.

As I said, the pictures are night and day different (figuring that the G15 and the G16 are much the same camera), with the G7X II coming out the winner by a large margin, and I have a G15.

Go here - https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-powershot-g7-x-mark-ii-review/6

Make the second camera the G16.  Now move the highlighted box around the scene and watch the two cameras in the two box's below.  Change the ISO if you dare..!

Move the dotted/highlighted box over the bearded man just right of center.  Carefully move the box, to just off center to the right, in the center of his face.  Be sure to get his hair and his eye, nose and mouth in the square.

NOW...look closely at the details.  Note that the G7X II shows much more detail than the G16 does.  Look at the eye, look at the detail to the right of the eye, look at the mustache, look at the hair to the right.

All MUCH sharper with the newer camera.  Move the box around the scene.  much to se.

I got the G7XII in early May because I wanted a small compact to take on a trip to Hawaii. I also took a couple of other larger cameras, but I like having the small one with a fairly good capability to have with me when I don't want to take the larger stuff. I previously was using an S95, which was a very good camera for its time (came out in 2010). But I wanted newer technology...a larger 1" sensor (at least), touch screen, tilt screen, and newer capabilities. I considered the G5X and G1XIII, but finally decided to get the G7XII for several reasons: small size, and better zoom (24-100 and 1.8-2.8, like the G5X) than the G1XIII, which I finally ruled out due to very high price, less zoom and slower lens. I didn't choose the G5X because it seemed like it was ready for an update...it had a slower processor but in many ways it's very similar to the G7XII. But larger because of the viewfinder. I thought I wanted a viewfinder for a small camera, but decided I could forgo that and for the most part, I haven't missed it much.

Through using the G7XII on my vacation, I have come to really like it for certain things. You have to know what you want the camera for, and what features you definitely want to have. It doesn't replace a DSLR, but it's still a great little camera that can do a heck of a lot and produce very good photos. It takes good landscape type photos, it's great in low light (especially interiors....I wanted to shoot inside some historic buildings and I could do so without flash), I've even gotten some fairly good bird photos and its ability to shoot the Milky Way really surprised me. It has a lot of neat features on it, including some scene modes that are fun even if you don't use them frequently. The tilt up screen was useful on a number of occasions, and I like that. The touch screen menu system is pretty good and simple, and it's easy and quick access to change settings or access other things like the timer, closeup focus, manual focus.

I wasn't sure how much I'd like it when I bought it, but I'm very pleased with it and it's a good replacement for my S95.

Here are a few photo samples showing some of the different things it can do including scenic, closeup, night sky.  Most of these were just quick snaps, except the night sky one which took a bit of setting up with manual infinity focus, long exposure, etc.

Why not go mirrorless?

You can get a mirrorless or M4/3 that has a larger sensor and a pancake lens or whatever you want and have better images and flexibility.

Re: Suggestions for G19 replacement.

CMCM,

Thank you for the detailed response and for the attached pictures.  Very helpful.

I'm still waiting for someone to reply to my question about "Selective Colors" which is a feature of the Nikon CoolPix.  A friend had the CoolPix on a recent trip to Switzerland.  It was a fun project to photograph flowers, buildings, etc. with only one color ( ie: red ) and everything else being black and white.

I looked at the online manual for the Canon G7X and I don't see that feature.  I realize that I could shoot in raw and use PhotoShop to get that effect, but it would be nice to do in "in camera ".

There is no equivalent function in the G7X Mk II.

Thank you Dave.  I was rapidly coming to that conclusion.

It does make me wonder why Canon has not included that feature. I don't imagine it would be all that difficult.

It has an abbreviated version of the full manual available in PDF. Seems to be the norm for electronics products these days.

Mine (a Canon refurb) came with a full printed manual.

What I got with my new camera was a thick, multi-language "Getting Started" manual which does not contain all that is in the electronic manual which is internally labeled "PowerShot F7 X Mark II Camera User Guide".
