EF-M 15-45mm vs 18-55mm - Which to choose?

I currently have 3 EF-M lenses for my M6. The 11-22mm, 15-45mm and 22 f2.

I was thinking if I should replace my 15-45mm with a used 18-55mm to get more reach on the telephoto end, since I already have the 11-22mm to cover the wide end?

Also, looking at sample photos, the 18-55mm seem to have a slight edge over image quality and stops at f5.6 instead of f6.3. Not to mention build quality too.

I'm also wondering why Canon has discontinued selling the 18-55mm lens? Is there an issue with it that made them decide to do so?

Does the 18-55mm seem to be the better choice for me?

That's a good question that I would like to know as well. The 18-55 cover a better range and I also have the 11-22 lens.

Re: EF-M 15-45mm vs 18-55mm - Which to choose?

I found once copy of the 15-45mm lens being better than the 18-55, and one copy being worse. In time, I only use 15-45mm for emergencies anyway, and got rid of both (the remaining one is mums with EOS M10).

In my opinion, it is not worth to scratch your head for these two lenses, if you don´t really know what´s best for you.

I mostly skip anything between real 22-50mm. For these focal lenghts, I got primes, and possibly 35mm f/1.4 is on the way. Sooo, one doesn´t really need to get best kit lens.

Not really long ago, the kit lens was 50mm prime for FF cameras.

I would rather invest into ultrawide or telephoto range. Tools and accessories.

I would suggest to buy EF-M 18-150mm IS STM, but rather save the money on the rumor EF-M 32 or 35mm F/1.4, or actually F/1.8 if they are announcing more lens next month.

Or if you have EF EOS M adapter, just use EF-S lens - I use to have EF-S 18-135mm IS STM, now i use the USM version.

I prefer the 18-55mm (28-90mm FFE) range to the 15-45mm (24-70mm FFE) range as 55mm on crop is just getting into comfortable portrait range; the interesting part of the 15-45mm range is already covered by my 11-22mm lens. I don't think there's an issue with the older lens, it's just that, for the 24x36mm format, 24-70mm lenses are currently more fashionable than 28-90mm lenses.

The main point against the older lens is that, now it's obsolete, it's going to be more and more difficult to replace if it goes wrong or gets broken in the future. It's a better finished lens than the newer one but the metal vanity shell is extremely thin, easily dented and scratched, though a better match for your other two lenses.

Only you can say if it's worth the money to switch lenses for 22% more reach and half a stop more aperture.  If you were to do it, now would be the time, while you still can.

If you want significantly more reach than what you've got, perhaps you should be looking at the EF-M 18-150mm or the EF-M 55-200mm.

Maybe you should skip both the 15-45 and the 18-55. If that new 32mm is going to be any good, i would go with that. 32mm is a nice all around focal length outside. If you want wider outside you have your 11-22. If you need wider indoors with low light, you have your 22mm. Adapt a 50mm f/1.8 stm for some reach and good portraitures . That fifty will give you way better quality than the 18-55 as it is very sharp from f/2.8.

Maybe - i think it should - that 32mm is good enough to not worry about the range from 33-49mm as cropping from the 32mm might give equal or even better results than zooming with a kit lens.

These seems like a pretty sensible path for those who use M series for most of their photography.  You have the 18-150 for overall use and then the 32/1.4 can be attached when ultimate (hopefully!) IQ and large aperture is desired.  Maybe add in a 22/2 for small form-factor with reasonable IQ.

The 18-150 is one of the two M lenses I don't own (the other is the 18-55).  From looking at images out there, it looks like the 18-150 has pretty good IQ for its range.  How is the AF speed on it?  AF performance has been my biggest obstacle keeping me from using the 55-200 much.

Re: EF-M 15-45mm vs 18-55mm - Which to choose?

Canon discontinued the 18-55mm because the 15-45mm is smaller, lighter, and cheaper to build.  There was nothing wrong with the 18-55mm.

Depending on your budget, you may want to also consider the 18-150mm lens.  If you get a good copy, it will be just as good as the 15-45mm and 18-55mm.  One other option would be to just skip the middle focal lengths and instead get the EF-M 55-200mm.

Any of these options would probably serve you better than the 15-45mm.

Not a tough question at all...

The key here is that you've held (and tried) both of them, you would probably come to an easier conclusion.

1.  I've been fortunate with the 18-55 in that I originally wound up with 3 copies (purchased with various kits) that were tack sharp from corner to corner.  Add to that the feeling of a higher build quality and a metal lens mount, it's not difficult to recommend this lens at all.  Why Canon elected to stop producing it is beyond me.  It's a classy looking kit lens - along the lines of the awesome 11-22.

2.  The 15-45 offers a more convenient 24 MM equivalent on the wide end, as opposed to the 28-29 MM wide angle equivalent on the 18-55 above.  Plus the 15-45 is a smaller lens.  The issues I've had - as mirrored by quite a few folks on this forum since this lens was first released is that copy-to-copy variations seemingly occur at a higher rate.  Now I don't want to get into a tit for tat about this matter.  Even an employee at Fuji Repair on the east coast of the US confirmed to me that they get a higher rate of this lens being returned for adjustment.  All they can do is replace it since it's not cost effective to try and repair it.  Along those lines, I've had to return 3 of them and the most recent 4th copy is a gem.  If you get a good copy of this lens - and there are many who do - it's a nice lens to have, that's for sure.

My suggestion is that both lenses are selling for a pittance on eBay (new copies) that I'd suggest getting both.  I know you'll wind up using both from time to time.

It is all a matter of shooting style and your personal requirements.

I find either one's range too restrictive and I chose the EF-M Tamron 18-200mm instead. This is my most used focal range which the Tamron serves very well at no loss from 18-55 when compared to the EF-M 18-55mm.

If I had to choose again today, I'd go for the EF-M 18-150mm although I love my Tamron.
But with each new body I had to update the lens's firmware.
Over 5 years covered by warranty,  I had 2 free updates (M3 and M5/6). Now would have pay approx. 150€ for each update.

Canon dropped the 18-55mm with the introduction of the M10.  That's pre-DPAF and well before anything resembling a decent vlogging camera.

O.k.  Than this vlogging might not be the reason.

Maybe Canon new cameras with suitable screens for selfies would come up in the future, and the lower production price was the factor not to wait changing the kit lens.

+1 for the 18-150.

I love the small size of my 15-45, and getting out to 24mm equiv is really nice.  My copy is excellent and I have no qualms about using it as a compact general purpose lens.

However sometimes I want more reach (instead of going wide), and I take my 18-135 STM (adapted) instead.  This is a very versatile range, and the 18-150 would be even more desirable since it’s so nice and compact.

I say keep both!

Re: EF-M 15-45mm vs 18-55mm - Which to choose?

18 mm end is too narrow for 90% of my club shots.  The 15-45 spends a lot of time around 16-17 with about 5% at 15 and the other 5% at 45.  Could wish for a 20 to 55, but not likely.  So my 18-55 will go with my M3 when I sell it as soon as I can.

Re: EF-M 15-45mm vs 18-55mm - Which to choose?

Assuming you get a good copy, the 15-45mm is a more useful range than the 18-55mm. Wide angle lens are not cheap and to me the 15-45mm is just wide enough that you might not need to get another wide angle lens. So with this 15-45mm kit lens, you can focus on getting a distance zoom lens next.

Most casual users just want to climb to a viewpoint and take a wide angle picture of the city/view below. And the 15-45mm is smaller and lighter to carry around.

It is much cheaper to buy an used 50mm f1.8 (with adapter) portrait lens than a wide angle lens.

If you are planning on getting the 11-22mm anyways, I guess the 15-45mm is pointless.
