4/3 to Micro 4/3 converter and lens responsiveness ?

Hello all, getting back into 4/3s system.  I am curious what the responsiveness is on the older lenses in 4/3 with the micro 4/3 converter.  I was thinking of picking up some longer lenses such as the 50-500 sigma with the 4/3 to micro 4/3 converter?

Does it focus just as fast , as the original mount ?

I currently have a metabones canon to micro mount , curious if it would outperform that mount system ?  Right now I have the canon sigma 150-600  with metabones and the G9, g7 panasonic.  Curious if the conversion 4/3 to micro would be a little more responsive?

Hi Jay,

Depends.

Certain 4/3 Oly lenses are CDAF-enhanced and focus decently on m4/3 cameras from both makers. Most lenses, however, are PDAF-specific and require an E-M1--either version--for good m4/3 focus response and accuracy. The Bigma would be one such lens, as are all the SHG Olys.

Another caution is that adapted 4/3 lenses can't deliver the high frame rates achievable by m4/3 lenses--a consideration for action work.

I happily use several 4/3 lenses on E-M1s and appreciate extending their useful lives well beyond the graveyard of the E-system. Many are still unique with no m4/3 replacement.

I'll defer to others on adapting Canon AF lenses, as I have no experience there.

Good luck!

Rick

I use several FT-HG/SHG-lenses on my EM-1s. However, at least my copy of the Bigma is not suited to high speed C-AF on EM-1 mk.2 as I only get unsharp photos.

It works fine with serial shooting with fixed AF and gives sharp photos, so I believe that the AF-engine in the bigma not is fast enougt to C-AF on EM-1 mk2.

I have not experimented with different lower speeds of C-AF with my Bigma.

I have a Bigma with FT mount that focusses OK on my EM1.1 in SAF.  In good light it's about the same as on an E30, maybe a bit slower.

I have an EF 300/4 IS USM that focusses OK with an MB4 with the latest firmware.  It can struggle to find focus initially but it reacquires it quickly.  The MB4 works quite differently with CDAF and OSPDAF bodies.  I have the impression that it can work better on Panasonic bodies.

ahaslet, what would you guys suggest.  I have the metabones adapter from canon.  My focus is ok speed take a bit but seems to work.  It sounds like the 4/3 adapter is almost like the metabones adapter.  I could invest in a 50-500 an adapter or try another canon lens.

Can I ask what setup you guys like the most ?  4/3 adapter or the metabones ?

My vote is for the FT to MFT adapter.  I paid more for a used FT mount Bigma than an EF mount Bigma would have cost.  I already had the Metabones, so that wasn't a consideration.

I can't recommend the Bigma.  Over 420mm it's very soft.  You might be better with a 100-400mm MFT lens in the long run.  Since you already have the Metabones, maybe you could try an EF mount Bigma and see how you like the IQ.
