Flash issue

i have altura flash that worked very well in TTL mode on my canon t4i rebel 650D.

The same flash on the t7i rebel 800D works on the one hand but the camera keeps saying it does not recognize the flash.

Note that the flash recognizes when the zoom is changed on the lens as well aschanges in aperture. It correctly displays both on its display.

Also when i change flash settings (such as flash exposure compensation) on the flash itself, the camera shows them on its display.

But... the camera still says unrecognizable flash. Remember the t4i 650D had no problem

would appreciate any help with this

thanks in advance

Canon has been changing its flash communication protocols.  Maybe that has something to do with it.

Re: Flash issue

This is one of the problems with buying a third party flash, Canon repeatedly change things, not enough to make their own flash guns incompatible but the third party ones cannot cope with the changes.

Re: Flash issue

Have you checked with the manuf if there is a firmware update available for your model?

Re: Flash issue

Canon has removed the center "x sync" contact on the hotshoe on both the 2000D and 4000D entry level cameras.  This removes  some functionality and it appears that only Canon brand EX flashes will function at all on these cameras.

This wouldn't be the issue with the OP's flash.  However Helen has an existing thread with lots more info regarding the missing x-sync terminal.

Re: Flash issue

There are real problems with older 3rd party center pin only flashguns regarding some of the very high trigger voltages, in some cases many 100's of volts, damaging the flash circuit.....see here for a list and more comprehensive explanation.

+1 I've seen it happen.

Lots more info in Helen's previous thread too.

Re: Flash issue

I've had several flashes over the past 10 years, some from 3rd party manufacturers. My advice is to always buy a flash from the same manufacturer as the camera. If you do that and you have a function failure for something that should work then you can go to the manufacturer and ask them to sort it.
